Who were the candidates for the LSU job in 2005?

Was Jimbo Fisher ever considered for promotion? Were there any other big names that were a serious player?

IIRC, wasn't a very good year for coaching talent.

I thought Jimbo was looked at but they didn't like him from his time as the OC at LSU.

Yes Fisher was interviewed. Skip wanted a sitting head coach though
Petrino was interviewed, nutt was interviewed, Bobby Williams iirc, also DelRio was non interviewed ( sat in his car in the parking lot scared Jacksonville would fire him if he actually met with LSU) and RC Slocum was interviewed after former President Bush (1) called skip and asked a personal favor to talk to RC. Miles of course and turned out to be the right pick
If Meyer and Spurrier hadn't already been hired at UF and USC one of those two would have gotten the job, certainly Spurrier
ETA:
Huh? Jimbo was Miles OC in 05 & 06

Yes Jimbo was considered.
Saban recommended Beamer who supposedly would have come if we had given him Saban's salary but we didn't want to do it. Jimbo was interviewed as was Nutt and RC Slocum.
But in the end it came down to Petrino and Miles.

Petrino would have dominated at LSU

Officially he wasn't the right fit
Unofficially he made every member of the search committees skin crawl

Here is a recent local article on this
for the quick version
quote:
Six face-to-face interviews were conducted from Dec. 26-30: then-LSU assistants Bobby Williams and Jimbo Fisher; Nutt, who had just finished his seventh season at Arkansas; former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum; Miles; and then-Louisville coach Bobby Petrino.

Pretty sure Miles, Nutt, Petrino, Del Rio, and Tubberville possibly?

My favorite part of the article
quote:
“Nick was taken back by that,” Weems said.
“ ‘Y’all have names of people?’ ” a stunned Saban asked, according to Weems.

Skip, as a great coach and great AD, prepared for all things.

Great article man. This part made me laugh. I totally understand their concern though. Speaking of Les Miles last game at Oklahoma State.
quote:
“They were getting beat. Bad,” Ausberry said. “We were going, ‘Come on, come on. Please come back.’ You worry about what your fan base and people are going to think.” Weems remembers it well. He and Gill looked at each other during the interview and thought the same thing: This could be Gerry DiNardo all over again. During his last game at Vanderbilt and days before LSU hired him in 1994, DiNardo’s team was beaten 65-0 by Tennessee. “It reminded us of that,” Weems said. Oklahoma State lost 33-7. A few days later, on Dec. 30 or 31, Miles was offered the LSU job.

Yeah, at the time, the only thing I could think of, was that he beat Stoops twice with less talent.

I thought Miles was a solid hire. At the time, I thought he had better credentials than Saban had at the time LSU hired him. I still remember the little ear piece head set Miles wore early in 2005. He trashed that quickly once SEC play started.

Yeah I don't think he ever wore this one after the first game. Probably not a good idea to try it out on the road at fricking Arizona State

That was game 2 of his tenure.
People forget that Katrina and Rita came through the first 3 weeks of his 1st season at LSU. We never had a bye as well. Week one was suppose to be ASU at LSU. Instead it was moved to Tempe. Next week 2 was rescheduled(bye week), the UT was moved from Saturday to Monday night thanks to Rita.

IIRC, UAB hired Jimbo, as their HC, but bama would not let that happen. Jimbo then took the OC job at FSU.

I think Madonna or Britney put that in vogue at the time.
I wish we would have gotten Spurrier in 87. Would have saved us a lot of suckage.
