I remember y'all getting a badass QB recruit but is he going to be the one to take over next season? How's y'all's backups looking and who do you predict takes the reins?

Yeah that would be Kyle Allen. It will be between him and Kenny Hill. Kenny played a little bit this year. He's a really good dual threat guy. I don't know much more than that yet I don't start following the new guys til spring.

Kyle Allen and Kenny Hill will battle it out for the starting role.

Should be a good position fight, but like Agforlife, I don't really follow the new dudes until the offseason.

assuming Manziel leaves (he will) we have two returning QBs.

Matt Joeckel - will be a SR. He's Luke's (Jags OT) twin brother. He redshirted so he'll be in grad school next fall at Mays. He's probably a poor fit for our offense as he's got a rather slow delivery. Most rule him out for the starting job but this season he's been the first backup and may well have that job next year.

Kenny Hill - will be a SO. He's pretty much the protypical QB that Sumlin wants. He's not a running QB but he's got wheels. Good bloodlines (his dad was MLB pitcher Ken Hill) and excellent success in HS (won a state title with Southlake Carroll - just like Greg McElroy and Chase Daniels). In limited reps, he looks the part, shows confidence and swagger, and the coaches love his potential

Kyle Allen - will be a FR. He's enrolling in January though so he'll get the spring reps to try to win the job. He's incredibly polished and absolutely blew up the Rivals 5* challenge last summer and won offensive MVP.

Sumlin's offense keys on decision making and a quick delivery. Things like running ability and a huge arm are secondary. Allen has the best arm of the 3. Hill the best wheels. Handicapping it I'd say Hill is a slight favorite because he's had the fall to practice and get a few game reps. But it's definitely wide open.

So what are the odds of Manziel staying, anyway? I've been busy recently, so all I know is what I caught from a blurb while watching the UNC/UK basketball game out of the corner of my eye. Something about him saying he hasn't actually decided to declare yet? Just standard press-speak from someone who still has a game left to play, or a genuine possibility that he's going to come back?

I heard yesterday that he told a reporter he "might" stay if he was graded in the 2nd round of the draft. Basically if he is gonna go in the 1st he is gone. With so many of the top QBs staying(Bridgewater and Mariota) or hurt(Murray and Mett) it's almost impossible for him to go anywhere but the 1st round.

Summary = He gone.

The "longest of shots" would be putting it mildly.

I've been busy lately, so I didn't realize Mariota and Bridgewater were both coming back. Yeah, that does tend to elevate Manziel's stock (though he's clearly a better prospect than Mariota anyway, imho. Bridgewater had what NFL scouts are looking for, but I still think he's not quite the lock to be a great pro that many think he is.)

But it may be that y'all will ultimately be better off with Manziel leaving this year anyway. I say "ultimately" because of course you won't be better off starting out next season. But it gives you a chance to really develop Allen and give him more playing time than he'd likely get backing up Manziel. Fan expectations will be lower without Manziel, too, so Sumlin won't have to coach scared and might be more willing to give Allen quality minutes.

If by some chance Johnny comes back I want to see the actual offense not the JM show. The play calling needs to improve but I am hoping that was just a by product of the JM show. The next 2 years will be very interesting to see.

I'm kinda conflicted on this one.

Kenny Hill: Mobile. Decent-Above Average arm. Has game experience, so he's certainly more polished than Kyle is at this point.

Kyle Allen: Rocket arm. Mobile enough to escape a pass rush, but not a real threat to rush for a first down, etc.

Both seem to offer a different dimension to the offense, and I would be perfectly fine with either one. The one thing that concerns me is, if we do decide to go with Kyle, that would mean his first taste of college football will be on the road in South Carolina. But, I also don't want to start Kenny Hill for that reason alone either, because I imagine whoever wins the starting job next year will be the starter for the foreseeable future, unless they start to struggle of course.

Should be interesting to see it all play out, and if there's one thing I've learned from Sumlin's track record, is that he knows how to evaluate and coach QB's

I know this is probably a stupid question and WON'T happen, but what would this offense look like with two full-time QBs? I know, I know, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterback," but it seems like KH and KA each offer something dynamic that we'd want to tap into.

Should be a spirited battle, at any rate!

I mean it really isn't too far fetched to think about. I do like the idea of having Kyle as your passer and then mixing in Kenny in there as a running threat, and then get the defense thinking that Kenny is in there to run and maybe then you can surprise them with a pass, etc.

I like the idea of having a 3+ year starter and allowing the offense to grow as the QB grows. But I think when you have talented QB's with differing skill sets, it would be silly to not explore all your options. Then again, I'm just a 22 year old who never played a down of football after Jr High, so I may just be talking out of my arse right now

I am hoping that Kenny Hill will go the baseball-only route! He is supposed to be a bad arse infielder.

I thought he said he was going to play both but I'll be a little surprised if he does this year with the wide open situation at QB. Here's a profile about him from SLC with interviews with his HS fb and bb coach as well as his dad.

I haven't heard a peep about him on the baseball side. You hear anything dabo? Would be nice to have the extra stick at 3rd. Maybe he'll RS in baseball to give himself more time to make the choice....see how football goes and he can enter the MLB draft after 3 years whether he redshirts or not but by RSing he gives himself more options.

I am pretty sure that he will be football-only at A&M. College baseball isn't terribly attractive to players with better options (i.e. only 11.7 scholarships for the whole roster).

well sure but as long as he is also playing football, he does not count against the baseball numbers. It's a freebie for RC.

I have a feeling Allen comes in and takes the job. I'm not sure why, I just think he'll buy in and start throwing darts all over the field. Nothing against Hill though.

As for the 2 QB deal... I am against it. Hill isn't THAT good of a scrambler. I'd much rather hand it off more then try to run a QB run heavy O with Hill. I just don't think that suits him.
