The face of college football is changing and that makes these kinds of looks back more interesting for reference.
It used to be major conferences such as the SEC, PAC, SWC etc would often only play 5 or 6 conference games per year and would often play 2-3 serious out of conference opponents from other conferences. Now we're seeing teams playing 8-9 conference games and 0-1 major out of conference opponents per year.
The bowl records are also interesting because you'll notice not all bowl relationships have been as constant as people like to pretend. The Rose Bowl for example advertises their Big 10 vs PAC matchup as a matter of tradition but this ignores the historical participation of other conferences (note Alabama, UGA, Tennessee, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Penn....)

Interesting thing of note is powerhouses such as Norte Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska being sub .500 in their bowl history.
Also despite some tough breaks in recent bowls, Oklahoma still retains a 27-17-1 record. Roll Tide!?

Uh you realize the Cap 1 bowl is higher in the SEC bowl hierarchy.. and pays out more than any other non-BCS bowl right? It isn't as old as the Cotton, which I do agree is a major bowl as well, but it was first played in 1947.
Nice try though.
Oh and while we're at it we also have a few Gator Bowl appearances. This was before that bowl game became the 7th or so selection in the SEC pecking order. It's also been around since the '40s and routinely featured top 10 teams, and in some instances even top 5 teams.
Point is, we haven't been to any of the BCS bowls before but if you're going to count the Cotton bowl as a major bowl you better count the Gator and the Cap 1 as well, I think we've been to a combined 5 or 6 times.

Interesting. No major bowl from SC? I didn't perceive them as a very good program historically, but this is still surprising. Looks like Mizzou is definitely on another level as a program.

2 years ago you would have been saying the SEC is overated and the Big 12 or whatever it is now is the best in all the land.
