Gators on Message Boards

So question:
How representative do you think the crowd that posts on message boards is of our fan base in general?
I find most everyone that posts here at the good ole SECr GSB to be passionate at times, but overall pretty good folks. However, some of the other boards... holy shite! It's all pitch forks, torches, black helicopters, and tinfoil hats. I've gone from wishing more posters would come over here to be happy that while we don't have a ton of posters, at least they all don't seem like they are posting off their meds and in the middle of a three day bender.
I find myself regularly hoping that this crowd doesn't accurately represent the fan base.

Most fans on the team message boards are simple minded. Very few objective posters, mostly one way or the other, unfortunately.

I remain fascinated at how truly important this is to some people, and that is largely informed by its being quite important to me. I was so upset after Georgia last year, I almost canceled classes for the first half of the week. I also decided that there needed to be a line drawn that week between my emotional involvement in sports and my real life.
A lot of people don't seem to draw that line. I can completely understand being frustrated with the coaching staff and wanting to see heads roll. I don't exactly agree, but I absolutely understand the sentiment. But for some, it sounds like they are less watching football than the invasion of Normandy. Then the conspiracy theories about who hired who, what each presser means, and down to guys in the NFL saying there HS instead of UF during introductions. It's a bit disturbing.
I know this sounds like I passive-aggressive way to attack others, but it really isn't. I'm just hoping we aren't as a whole this fricking crazy.

As you get older, you begin to learn that the success of your favorite team doesn't solely indicate your personal happiness. At least that is what I have noticed over the years. I find myself way less upset after a loss or miss in recruiting than I did 10 years ago. Now, I typically bitch and moan for a few minutes post game, then go hang out with the family. It used to tear me up until the following Thu or Fri (until I could start getting over the previous opponent and excited for the next game). Things have certainly changed in my life. I think it is more of a maturity issue.

I agree. When I was younger a Gator loss meant a bad day no matter what else went right that day. I was embarrassed at a loss.
As I get older I realize how foolish it is to tie your personal identity to a sports team when you have zero control over the outcome of their games.
I want my university to be successful in all sports but it doesn't define who I am.
I do like having a reasonable educated discussion about sports but the rant ain't the place for that.
I guess that's why my post count is so low.

Nice perspective.
Post more on here. We have a nice little community on this board.

Agree with DMB, the general rant is crazy, but our board here has some good folks up for heated discussion without devolving into headcases.

I lik to be happy, so I try to look at the positive outlook of things. I try to stay away from negativity because I rather not get in bad moods about things I have no control over. So I simply don't participate in certain things. To me this is for entertainment not for suffering. If I start suffering, I simply turn it off.
Life is short. I rather not spend mylife beating dead horses or arguing with people I will never convince of a different point of view.
I guess that makes me a terrible poster

How is the alumni scene out in Austin? I moved to Gainesville from there and plan to move back when I am done.

Austin is awesome. I currently live in Houston, but moved to Houston from Highland Park. Can't stand it here, but I escape up to Austin whenever I get the chance.

I manage to get back out there pretty often myself. I miss my damned brisket breakfast tacos.

Even though the message board Gators are insane, I like that they are there. I see Gator hats and merchandise all over the country but I don't think we have a lot of tradition and I don't see us travel well to bowl games (if that counts for anything). You see lots of Floridians switching out Hurricane gear for UF gear for FSU gear based on how good the teams are. How many diehard Gator fans are there?
I don't think the message board Gators represent the majority of us except for maybe this season, only because this season is really frickin bad.

Yeah, I don't really think we are indicative of the majority of fans. Most don't care enough to spend too much time going on message boards.

I agree our board is not as crazy as some of the rest. I work at a place with crazy football fans so a loss for florida normally involves a long day or even week of trash talk about how bad we are.

I think the only issue I have is the 100% nega-gator or 100% sunshine pumper. At least this board has its own views, but and at least thinks logically (although game threads shouldn't count, because god knows what I've written on them
).

Same, although I still have the 24 hour rule. The UGA loss pissed me off pretty significantly, I remember being out with friends, but was pretty subdued that night. I agree, though, it shouldn't define who you are. The GSU sucked for the night, but I was fine the next day. As I said on an earlier posts, game threads are a different animal though
As for the Rant, true, about the reasonable discussion. Although, I find it still better than any other board (it's either one view or another when it comes to Florida)

I had to instate that one myself. After a game I want everyone fired. The next day I am a little more level headed.

I used to be insane when we lost important games and I recall the worse ones:
1990 UF vs UT when Spurrier had guided us to undefeated season far and at halftime in Knoxvegas the score was 7-3, the second half kick off was run back by Dale Cater ( a great safety ) and the gates opened up...we lost 45-3 and I threw rum and coke right through my living room tv and had to watch bedroom tv after that with more alcohol
1980 UF vs UGA everyone should know this game and I still hear Larry Munsons raspy voice when it was replayed later on
1976 UF vs UGA one of my all time lows (you think its bad NOW?)and we ran the wishbone with some of the fastest and shiftiess humans on earth in the backfield...very explosive and we outscored quite a few teams in shootouts...it was 40-70 yd TD runs by the buckets back then. Anyway, UGA ran the veer offense and we took it to them...27-13 halftime score and I was jumping in the stands as we had not lost to a SEC team that year and could FINALLY win it! Well...Vince Dooley must have blistered everyone of the dawgs azzs and they came out FIRED UP. They promptly smoked us on the ground and we couldn't stop them. It was 27-27 and they were a runaway freight train...Dickey had a 4th and 1 at our own 29 yd line and he KNEW that if we punted they were coming right down the field...so he gambled and lost. A run sweep by Earl Carr to the sidelines (UGA had stacked the inside)almost made it a 71 yd TD...but one defender was there to bring him down. I have always agreed that the right call was made. Earl Carr was a fullback...but fleet footed.

FWIW, on the other Florida sites and blogs I visit, FSU fans have not handled their win well at all.
All they do is troll. One guy even created a UF alter for the whole season and fricked up yesterday and logged into his Nole account and posted
