Bama fans dont like that question
I don't like it because the stereotype that Bama fans compare all Bama coaches to Coach Bryant is just false. That might have been true in the 80s but Bama fans compare our coaches to their peers. Media are the ones who constantly bring up Coach Bryant

I totally agree, and witnessed it myself. The same ole Stereotype still going on even today. South all " Rednecks" and The Rust Belt was in the media mindset; where it was "happening". That is why we love beating the crap out of those Notre Dame and Big Ten Homers. The SEC is now more respected then 30+ years ago....'bout time!

Pre-BCS, split title were far more common. It just wasn't any tougher to win a title back then as it is today.

Tell that to 66 Bama , 77 Bama and to 1974 Bama who was 11-1 vs. USC 10-1-1 ...... I know Oklahoma won the AP with a 12-0 record but they weren't eligible for the coaches poll.
Bear Bryant went 10-1 at Kentucky and beat # 1 Oklahoma in the bowl game in 1950, I don't think anybody else but Bryant could do that.

You can say the same about Auburn in 2004.
shite just happens some years and we have a terrible system of determining a champion. There's about 80 teams too many in the FBS. Maybe more.

Nick Saban won a National Title at LSU.... solid
Bear Bryant won a National Title at Kentucky... in FOOTBALL. We have a winner!

It's a generational thing. We old folks that were around before, during and after Coach Bryant have a much greater reverence for what "Coach" accomplished. The younger crowd..not so much.
The great thing is that along with coaches Wade and Thomas, Alabama fans have the best selection to choose from of any place in America.

I don't like the must win six national title argument. The two eras are not even remotely the same. I think what Saban is doing is much more difficult as there are several teams in the west division alone in the top ten: then if you manage the regular season you usually face a top ten east team and then face either the first or second best team in the nation for the title. Bear didn't have to overcome those odds. Sorry Saban is already more impressive to me and it's not really close.
You definitely have a point. But the discussion doesn't end there.
In the BCS era, for an SEC team, you KNOW you are playing two elite games, and possibly more. Right now, Alabama's schedule is being mocked by LSU and we play FOUR elite games if we want to win it all. This was simply not the case in Coach Bryant's era. When you add in the fact that there is SO much more parity now, both in mid-level SEC teams and even in teams considered "easy", it's not close. Can you IMAGINE Coach Bryant watching Ole Miss pull in a class like this in his day? In national titles, I go with Saban. But you can't discount Coach Bryant's remarkable number of SEC titles.
Bottom line - no way to say definitively at this point. Coach Bryant would have to accomplish a similar feat in an age that guaranteed solid scheduling. Coach Saban would have to coach a lot longer to even have a chance at doing something comparable with the conference titles. Neither is clearly better than the other at this point.

Tougher to win titles now with so many more competitive teams and recruiting restrictions. Bear could sign as many as he wanted. What Saban is doing is more impressive to me.
Saban > Bear
Saban > Bear

Bear would drink Saban under the table...
Oh, you meant better at coaching football. My bad.

But he couldn't touch Majors!

Must be tough to be a Tennessee fan. Your one title in the modern era was under a fat backstabber who screwed Johnny Majors out of the head coaching job.
At least you can love Peyton.

PS- I still have the memory of Peyton leading the Tenn. crowd in B'ham singing "Rocky Top" after a win. I don't love him.

Is Saban wins another and stays at Alabama until he retires . . . then he will be an equal in my eyes. The game is sooooo much different now - getting to the top of the mountain is alot more difficult now.

I think if y'all win again this year , it will definitely become a discussion.
It is a legit question, but not yet. Bear's ability to adapt over time keeps him #1 to me.
If Saban stays another 5 years and keeps performing at the level he is now (nattys or not), then he probably gets the nod.

Nope. Saw Peyton's bootleg this weekend and thought, "where else have I seen a defense so faked out of their jocks like that".
