JASPER, Alabama - A 5-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after she was severely injured when a dog attacked her Friday night.
According to a statement from Jasper Police Chief Connie Rowe, the girl was attacked by a dog reported to be a pit bull at 7 p.m. Friday.

A neighbor came to the girl's rescue, and she was airlifted to Children's of Alabama around 8 p.m.
Rowe said the girl, whose identity has not been released, underwent surgery overnight to close her head wounds.

I'm a dog lover, but I fail to see the advantage of this breed of dog. Should they be eradicated?

The dogs are not family type dogs. I feel like it is not 100% on just the dogs, the owners have to have some sort of liability. If you have kids and aggressive/territorial natured type animals you should really be on your parenting A game. Pits are master-loyalty type only dogs, they dont mix well with small people pulling there ears and picking at or chasing them. This is tragic and the dog will be put down for it as it should be, but I feel like the family/owner should also face tremendous repurcussions for it as well. Nothing is worse than bad pet owners.

Bullshite. 60-70 years ago they were known as great family dogs especially with children. The thing that has changed are the type of people who own them And how they treat them. If you take away pits trashy people will just find another breed to mistreat And raise like crap that will be attacking people just as much.

Only if we can eradicate some of their owners first.
FWIW I'm not saying pit bulls can't be an aggressive breed, but I've seen some families raise pit bulls around children without an issue. Dobermans as well. But these families were also cognisant of having very young children around those animals. I see your stat about 2 year olds and I have to wonder what these parents were thinking. I don't know that I'd have any dog around a 2-year old, because they can be very territorial.

Pits weren't as widly inbred back then as they are now with their "popularity" with the urbanites and lot lizards of the world. Those folks will just pay 200-250 for a pup that is borderline retarded because his parents were siblings and they had a nice brindle pattern. Yes how the dogs were raised is a big portion of it. If you read my entire post you will see that I am all for punishing the owners... the demand of the dogs in general have led to some of these instances and the family dog that they were has lost its moniker within itself.
I am not saying they can not be good family dogs, they just have a short fuse with young children aggravating them. Especially if the children come after the dog has been raised there, they are territorial animals.

The thing about pit bulls is even if they are raised by the right family there is still a good chance they could turn

Unfortunately this is very true.

im sure the white trash family that owned the pit is going to tell us it was a good sweet dog and the child is at fault for being so tasty. pit owners are generally pieces of shite.

Yeah I mean people who say its all the owners and never the dog, are full of shite. If you bred aggressive humans with the ability and genetics to be unreal strong and unpredictable for hundreds of years, they would be extremely dangerous, no matter how they are raised. Yes how you raise them is some of it but those breeds can snap.

Hundreds of years of unpredictability? Again, this is bullshite. They used to be known for being great around children. The dogs didn't change, the type of people owning them did. In the 80's it was rots And dobermans, now it's pits.

There is certainly a problem with selection effects. Is the population of pit-bull owners reflective of the population of dog owners generally? If not, it's hard to rule out what role the owner is playing.

pit owners are usually trashy, poor, and stupid. Id say the owners of pits are basically like the bama fans that go to fan day but of the dog owner world.
imo people that own pits shouldn't be allowed to vote

People that say it's the owner, not the dog, are people that have never seen an otherwise perfectly behaved dog remember it's instincts and attack someone.
The truth is never so black and white.

no troll here, for the most part pit owners are trashier than other dog owners. They usually have tats, have done some jail time, work some min wage job. sure some might not fit that mold but most pit owners are trashy.

You could say that about any dog breed. They all come from the domestication of a wolf. It's normally how you socialize the animal at a young age that determines it's behavior. If you just throw it in a backyard and rarely interact the dog will become timid and untrustworthy.

Then maybe the owner should be more cognisant of having young children around any kind of dog? This is still an owner issue.
