I got a pit about 10 years ago in college. I really don't know what 20 year old me was thinking. Our dog is very well behaved and we have never seen her come close to be aggressive. She has been the best minding dog I've ever owned and is great around our kids. However there is no doubt I would never own another one of these animals because it does feel like a ticking time bomb.

It sure does seem like the majority of people who own them tend to be trashy. And it seems like those that have the ones that attack people are trashy 99% of the time. I'm just saying that you could take Golden Retrievers And have the same issues if you switched the two breeds.

honestly with a dog like a pit a trashy/ bad owner makes a huge difference because of the amount of power those dogs have. A bad shitty owner of a small dog usually just results in a annoying ankle bitter. Same type of owner with a dog like a pit that can be aggressive plus strong and its trouble. Then on the rare occasion you have a good owner that has done nothing but the right things when a dog like mine or another dog snapped for whatever reason its not going to be nearly as bad as something like a pitt snapping. it truly is a combination of the breed plus owner. the trashier and dumber the owner the more likely the dog to attack.

When I was younger my dad rescued a pitbull puppy, he was on his way home from work & whoever the owners were had the mother tied up on a chain inside a fence. & my dad decided to report the people & actually took one of the puppies. He was a full blooded pit. Had him until he died never hurt anyone wasn't aggressive at all, then again he was spoiled with attention and all.

Haha. The puppies were barely 6 weeks so I doubt it, even though back then I was a pretty bad kid. So it's sure a possibility.

Pits weren't as widly inbred back then as they are now with their "popularity" with the urbanites and lot lizards of the world. Those folks will just pay 200-250 for a pup that is borderline retarded because his parents were siblings and they had a nice brindle pattern. Yes how the dogs were raised is a big portion of it. If you read my entire post you will see that I am all for punishing the owners... the demand of the dogs in general have led to some of these instances and the family dog that they were has lost its moniker within itself.

This is pretty much it. I'm on the board for and work with a local animal shelter. You would be shocked at what kind of pieces of shite call us up looking for dogs. We had one guy call us up and ask us if we had a non-neutered big black dog. When told that we spay and neuter all the dogs that come through, he said "Oh, I just need one to breed with my dog". He didn't give a shite what kind of dog it was, he just wanted a big black dog to breed with.

Plus Alabama has some of the worst pet laws in America.

No. but we ask them about their home and where they plan to keep the dogs before we even let them see the dogs. You would be shocked how many say that they are going to chain them to a tree and get hung up on.

Then maybe the owner should be more cognisant of having young children around any kind of dog? This is still an owner issue.

So then to be safe, kids should never be allowed around any dog, period.

If you can't accept that, then you have to accept that the occasional dog bite/mauling is going to happen, and sometimes, it's just a dog being a dog.

Pitbulls are great pets unless their owners are irresponsible fricks.

You could say that about any dog breed. They all come from the domestication of a wolf. It's normally how you socialize the animal at a young age that determines it's behavior. If you just throw it in a backyard and rarely interact the dog will become timid and untrustworthy.

All of this is spot on.
