Obviously we're not going to agree on this. I've had a sour taste in my mouth for the man since he sold a bill of goods and then ran off in the night.
I don't particularly care for him either but I must give credit where credit is due. The Shula years could have been a lot worse if not for the talent that was amassed on defense in the classes of 2001 and 2002.

Well, you ran off Stallings and he won a national title at Alabama.

I thought we had all agreed to never mention this mans name again?

Why you gotta bring up old shite?

And then Bob Bockrath proceeded to run Stallings off in 1996.
If you want to blame anyone for the 10 years of roaming in the wilderness, Bockrath is your freaking man. University President Andrew Sorensen also deserves some credit as well.

He could have done more. He never sit well with in-state coaches and spent his time trying to recruit Texas and Oklahoma high schools, from his TCU days. I know things could have been worse if not for guys like Mark Anderson, Freddie Roach, Roman Harper, etc., but his complete lack of effort in trying to sign linemen was always baffling to me.

I would blame three men. Bockrath, Bow Tie Andy, and Joab Thomas. Thomas started it when he tried to de-emphasize football in the 80s. He's the reason Bowden turned the job down in 1987. Things worked out, getting Stallings in 1990. But then Bockrath ran him off, like you said. Sorensen nearly finished Alabama football off. Thank God he left for South Carolina in 2002.

I agree with you. We could have been much better off had Fran decided to go after the big hosses who live in the trenches. As a guy who loved to run the option you would think that would have been his first priority. But whatever. What's done is done. Fran's career is washed up and we are performing at a level that hasn't been seen in Tuscaloosa since the 1970s. In the end we came out on top.

That's because we still fricking sucked as a University and program and Gene had shite for experience. Our Old-Army big cigars were naive as frick about stuff like that (some still are), but that was a long time ago. I wasn't even born yet.
Gene went and got 18 years of NFL coaching experience before heading to Bama, which already had a foundation in place for him to walk right into and be successful. It was two totally different coaches in two totally different eras, and 1965 A&M looked more like the Citadel than the largest public school in Texas it is now.

I think people forget. Fran was not an option guy until Urban Meyer at Utah beat the frick out of us and he decided to take our 5* non-option-running slim built QB and turn him into a Tim Tebow.

We're still recovering from that shite.

I don't forget. Fran ran the 1990s Nebraska offense. We ran a lot of option out of the Power-I. Little old Tyler Watts probably lost 10 years of his life getting crushed running that offense.

There's your answer. Bowden always wanted that job. Could have skipped the dark years, but they had to shiit in Bowden's face. Totally fricktarded leadership at that point.

Imagine this occurring for five motherfricking seasons. The way Sherman was able to repair the O Line in the wake of Fran was unbelievable with guys like Joeckel, Matthews, Pat Lewis, Ogbuehi, Jarvis Harrison

Fran was a complete disaster for A&M.
What pissed me the most was how long he was allowed to stay.
This program is really just now recovering from the Fran years.

except he was so fricking bad high school coaches started refusing to deal with him, and would NEVER let their kids go to A&M.
I've harped on this for years and I know I've repeated it here but I was working for a news station in Tyler at the time and multiple head coaches in East Texas flat out told me they discouraged kids from going to A&M b/c they absolutely hated Fran. This wasn't just at rinky dink 2A or TAPPS schools either. It went all the way up to the 4A and 5A schools.

Though the Alabama fan base was clearly dedicated to Franchione, and though the Alabama administration was actively seeking to sign him to a lucrative long-term contract extension, Fran was already looking for the escape hatch after a mere twelve months on the job.
