He jumped on Mobile when he got to LSU. Of course, Bama being on probation didn't hurt his cause. AU also got great players out of Mobile at that time.

I have no idea what he did at LSU when he arrived there, but I do know he met with the big-money boosters at Alabama, when he took the job, and told them "point blank" he didn't need their help recruiting. Just their help funding the program.

Stopping Bama's boosters from cheating might be Saban's most miraculous and seemingly impossible accomplishment.

I know you like to use the Dale Denton method of flaming, by doing so with every post, but I'll indulge you.

Bear leaning on the goal posts in pre-game is the most iconic image for any Alabama fan from that era, and for many years after.

And he recruited terribly and left Mike Shula nothing.

Not true at all. He left Shula a lot of future NFL stars on the defensive side of the ball. That '05 defense, one of the better Alabama defenses in the last 25 years, was a product of Fran's recruiting. He sucked recruiting offensive players but he snagged a few NFL stars to play defense for him.

He left a starting defense. That's it. There was no depth at any position. He was simply able to put together 11 overlooked defensive players, in the two classes he signed and a third he started, that would make up the 2005 defense.

Didn't know this. Just him standing there staring at his players go through warmups or something?

Yep. That was always the place to find him throughout pre-game apparently.

to his defense, he was extremely restricted due to our sanctions.

Obviously he had to deal with the rumor of NCAA sanction and ultimately the 2002 class signed five days after they were announced, but he knew that it was likely coming. Yet he never built depth along the line of scrimmage. That's the most critical positions to fill. That cost us during the Shula era.

He was only here for two years. It's difficult to build quality depth when you are limited by sanctions and run off as quickly as you came. Those players Fran recruited on the defensive side of the ball kept us in a lot of games we should have been blown out in in 2004 and was the main reason we won 10 games in 2005.

Obviously we're not going to agree on this. I've had a sour taste in my mouth for the man since he sold a bill of goods and then ran off in the night.
