It wasn't about social self righteousness for me though.
But it definitely was for a lot, especially the ones I knew/banged. To each his own, though. I won't ever tell anyone how to find their peace with God, only that I feel they are being dishonest and disingenuous in what they are doing. I may not know the right answer, but I can spot a few wrong ones.

Meh, everyone had a different experience. Met some real genuine folks at Breakaway, though. As usual, the mean is where the answer lies. It's all about what you get out of it, though, like you said.
Personally, I miss it.

"That, and the minister told us all how we should vote one Sunday"
Although I'm pretty conservative on most political issues, this also irritates me very much. The corporate Church needs to focus on improving itself and its members and making extra sure what they are teaching and promoting is Biblically sound rather than railing against sinful activity in the country at large. That's what I find offensive about the Religious Right political movement. Churches shouldn't be involved in politics anyway. After all, Jesus said go therefore and make disciples...............". He didn't say go out there and become politically active and crusade against sin or sinful laws out in the world. At some point in the 20th century, the Church (especially the Baptist Church) lost sight of its true mission to "make disciples" and instead divided much of their time to various self righteous, political crusades which has caused them to lose their true mission and the Church as a whole has suffered for it.

Like Arklamissy, I grew up Baptist but switched to Presbyterian later on. Although they can be involved in politics, they tend to focus much less on it and the doctrine seems more Biblically sound.

I grew up Presbyterian. Seems identical to Methodist/Lutheran in practice.

Probably because the ministers, generally, are more educated in theology, which is the main attraction for me.

The Presbyterian and Methodist denominations are similar in their doctrines and focus on biblical accuracy, but the Presbyterians are more liberal in their social and political beliefs.

Hmmmm ...
No, the minister I am referring to was older (should've known better) and had grown children at the time of the scandal & his ousting. He left the church and town, immediately, when it became public. It was before 89. The church I am referring to was/is the biggest one, Baptist or any other denomination, in town. Ring any bells?

They're coming right up, but only if you stop referring to me as Debra Winger's character in Urban Cowboy.
It's MISSY, NOT "Sissy."

Based on my limited knowledge of the lingo of the Jersey Shore trash, I believe the "D" refers to "Down."
DTF = down to ... you know the rest

I do love how when the religious right started to become more politically aware and active in the 80s all of the sudden this was a dire threat to the Republic in the media. Hell, if you listened to the NY Times or CNN a Baptist with a Bible is more of a threat to America than a terrorist with a car bomb. But you never heard a peep from the media when the left-wing religious groups sounded off on an issue.
