Dixie Chicken and Dudleys - drink beer and eat burgers.
They are next door to each other across street from campus. and dry bean saloon for shots.

there was a place out west of town - maybe 20-30 miles west, that had an all-you-can-eat catfish/chicken lunch/dinner, and I can't for the life of me remember the name. Country something?
It burned about 15 years ago. I think it was called the Country Kitchen. Great catfish.

Is that the place at lake Somerville that had the ginormous chicken fried steak and steaks?

heard fargo's is packed now that it got mentioned in the top 50 in Texas Monthly. Also, Layne's > caines and anyone who says otherwise or thinks there is not a difference is just wrong, sorry.

Go to La Bodega (it's on Northgate) and get any of the burritos and make sure to order the Mexican Martini, it's easily my favorite restaurant in town and I have yet to find a restaurant anywhere else that has similar food. It's one of the big things I miss about not living there.

Oh, there's a difference alright--layne's sucks donkey balls. I refuse to point our visitors in the wrong direction

I do not support chain restaurants, which is what caines is, and it started in Louisiana.
Laynes is the correct answer, and the only answer.

so you don't support Freebirds?

Nope, not since they sold several years back and the quality went away.
And of course I eat at chain restaurants, but given the choice ill always choose a local establishment.

That's it, thanks. Damn shame about it going kaput. For an all-you-can-stuff-in-your-mouth place it was really, really good in the 70's.

I may be wrong but I think it was closer to Caldwell. Maybe chicken fried steak but definitely not steak. Their catfish was fantastic and the chicken was also very good. Sorry to hear it is no more.
