Conference Expansion - VA Tech

I've seen a lot of talk here and other places about the possibility of VA Tech joining the SEC and how that would deliver the DC area tv market. But would VA Tech really deliver the DC market?
For one thing, Blacksburg is 268 miles from DC. I lived in DC for a couple of years almost 10 years ago, and I honestly can't recall meeting any VA Tech grads/fans while living there. On the other hand, I knew a bunch of UVA people, a few MD people, as well as people from most other SEC and ACC schools.
Also, VA Tech has only been in the ACC since 2004. VA Tech wasn't even in a major conference until 1991 when they joined the Big East...... having previously been turned down by the ACC multiple times.
I have no doubt that adding VA Tech would deliver the Richmond and Tidewater tv markets. But I'm not so sure about the DC market. What does everyone think?

They are needed so the confederacy is complete in sports.

Show me any potential expansion team that brings more than this to the table...

The ACC never wanted them. They used political pull to basically force UVA to vote against all expansion plans that didn't include VT. UVA really didn't want them.
Once Beamer leaves they will return to being a poor man's MSU.

I'd like Virginia Tech just so we can add Enter Sandman at Lane Stadium... one of the best things in all college sports... as an SEC Tradition.

No. VT would add nothing.

VT is a perfect fit and adds about 4-7 million tv sets, after beamer leaves they'll add a big name coach due to the lure of the SEC.

Quite honestly. I did not expect Mizzourah to be the 14th member. I thought they were going to add VT as the 14th. Regardless, I think VT and UNC should be added to the east and Mizzou needs to shift to the west at this point

Boy do the Shelties love VT. Like I said prior, once Beamer they are a poor mans MSU. At least with all other SEC fans they don't switch fandom once basketball season starts. They are POOR fans. If we want to add Duke and UNC fans to the SEC, let's just add those schools so we get basketball. I would prefer UTx or OU, and I HATE the idea of UTx. Hell I rather add Richmond. Add the same markets for the most part(Roanoke is nothing) they are at least fans of the football and basketball team.
People joke about Bama fans only thinking one sport exists. Add VT and see who is the joke.

VT has not won a national championship in any NCAA recognized sport, men's or women's.
ETA: Wow, there's a whole site dedicated to this: LINK
I think it's the shared military college history for some Aggies. Both A&M and VT have a Corps of Cadets.

Like I said a poor mans MSU. MSU at least has been to the CWS, and MSU is worlds ahead of VT in basketball. Not that their fans even know those teams exist.
As for the military thing, let's add Navy. Not much further North, and they have athletic history.

Interesting trivia: only 4 BCS conference schools have not won an NCAA championship:
Kansas State
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
Virginia Tech
Ole Miss at least has its MNCs in football.
~10 non AQ FBS schools on that list also.

Didn't know it was that few. That's even more embarrasing. Even Richmond has a Natty in 1-AA. And VT certainly has the worst AD out of the 4.
ETA: hell the ACC didn't even want them. They were basically forced to add them by VA politics just to add Miami.
I hope UVA pulls the same shite if VT looks to leave

Re: Beamer leaving
There are two likely scenarios...
1. If he leaves prior to them joining the SEC they may fade into obscurity.
2. If he leaves after joining the SEC they will get a big time coach.
I was very impressed with them when we had a home/home with them.
