What's the reason for the Spanish architecture at LSU, particularly the part around the Quad?

LSU doesn't have Spanish architecture.

It's actually Italian. Florence, specifically.

Don't remember why, but it works very well with stately oaks, crepe myrtles and azaleas.

When I visit central California, where oaks and Spanish architecture are also plentiful, it reminds me a lot of LSU's campus. Paso Robles in particular.
