If tonight was any indication, Childress may not survive the season

The offense has gotten worse and worse over the last 3-4 years and tonight was just HORRIBLE. 4 hits against Illinois-Chicago and a 2-0 loss in your home opener.

Back from Olsen with a few thoughts:
1. RC is the pitching coach and has nothing to do with the offense. It's the same setup as at Nebraska where Dave Van Horn was the hitting coach and had nothing to do with the pitching. DVH and RC were essentially co head coaches, as are RC and Sawyers now. I don't like the setup, but the offense is entirely on Andy Sawyers other than the fact that RC hired him.
2. The offense has been hot and cold every season since RC got here (in 2006). In 2011 we were hot at the end of the season, went to Tallahassee, and kicked the Seminoles asses right there in the own super regional. I wouldn't say that we've gotten worse over the last three or four years. I'd say we were dismal at the end of 2012 but better in 2011 than 2010 and better in 2010 than 2009.
3. The problem with this offense is that you have to execute. There is no margin for error, and that includes defense. You can't have E5's like we did tonight. I didn't score the game, but I don't think that either of their runs was earned.
We failed to get our leadoff man on seven times tonight. That won't cut it with station to station baseball. I really wish we had signed some juco guys this off-season. As it is, we have three seniors and 15 freshman. We've got to find offense from someone unexpected or it's going to be a long, long year.
The terrible thing is that we are playing a fluff series this weekend, but we follow that up with Pepperdine, then Rice/Houston/North Carolina, and then CS Fullerton. We've got to get our shite together in the next two games because it gets much tougher.

I agree the offense is abysmal but give me a break
If you thought we weren't going to be rebuilding this year I'm not sure what to tell you. We're incredibly young and obviously lost a ton from last years squad. Plus we were in Omaha season before last.
If we are talking Sawyers then I might agree with you

I'm pretty sure you just want everybody fired who doesn't look they're going to win a national championship immediately.

Our hitting is so awful that I have a hard time believing we actually practice it.

You realize this is baseball and that was 1/60 of the season.
If Martin pitches like he did tonight every Friday then he'll be a 10 game regular season winner.

Sawyers should have been gone last year. I don't know why Childress has kept him around as long as he has. I think the last time we hit a home run when it truly mattered was Juengel in the Florida State super regionals. I could swear he was a junior last year though..
I agree this is a rebuilding year...but there's still no excuse to lose to Illinois-Chicago...a team that has to share a stadium with two other schools.

Both runs were unearned...but we RUN RULED this exact same team (and pitcher) in the opener last year.

Oh, and I know baseball is a 53-56 game season.
If you look at our schedule though, if we can't hit against Illinois-Chicago, we will get DESTROYED by Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and South Carolina.
That's a possible 15 losses right now, not to mention CS-Fullerton and the other teams in the SEC gauntlet.
It's going to be a ROUGH year. Small ball may win a conference like the Big 12, where only 2-3 teams are worth a damn, but it will get us KILLED in the SEC.

Seriously, step back and take a breath. It's one bad game during a year where we knew full well there would be problems. If we get swept by UIC and if we're still bad by the time conference play rolls around then maybe there's a legitimate concern about Childress. But even if we get better it'll probably still be a bit of a rough year. Again though, we knew that coming in. Just wait and see what happens. Baseball's a marathon, not a sprint.

This. Stop being a cry baby.

It's pretty telling when the same players that couldn't hit the ball if it was the size of a BASKETBALL (Bolcerek, Bratsen, Curl, Stein, Nau) are picking up right where they left off in 2012.
The only player last night who was worth a shite on the plate was Moroney (freshman).
A 10K, 0ER, 100+ pitch night from Martin COMPLETELY wasted because we have the power of a 10 watt bulb.

The point is it seems that if any of our sports teams have a bad string of games, or in this case, a single bad game, you're calling for the coach's head.
If we lose to Bama in football next season I fully expect a fire Sumlin thread out of you.

I personally cannot wait for the fire Sumlin thread next year. Oh and then if the women's basketball team gets knocked out of the tournament early I hope we get fire Gary Blair thread.

This inept offense has been around for a while now. My point is that if yesterday's game becomes the NORM rather than the exception...and we get SWEPT by UIC, we have some serious problems.

Let me guess, you thought Mike Sherman needed more time after the 2011 season?
Oh, and please, by all means, point out where I said that Childress should be fired. Don't all start at once...or have you forgotten what a first year AD did to Mark Johnson when he had his shitty season?

while I thought the way it was handled was shitty, Mark Johnson missed the playoffs 4 out of his last 6 years.
Meanwhile the only year Childress has missed in his 6 years was his 1st.
Unless the team bottoms out to the point they aren't even competitive this year he isn't getting canned.
You overreact too much my man.

Depending on how things go this year I could see us not getting to the playoffs. But that still wouldn't justify firing Childress. If we missed the playoffs again next year then I could see something being done. Childress has just done too much for us for too long to be fired after one bad year.
