The Opening Drive is terrible. I actually can't believe that show is still on the air. Barker must have 250 vacation days a year.
I really wonder what some of Finebaum's callers are going to do. So many of them derive their self worth from calling the show.
The Roundtable will need to adapt a little bit, but it can fill the void nicely. At least I won't have to listen to the Jerry Springer shite for 3 months.

I miss the Dunnaway & Brown show "D&B." It was much better before they incorporated it into the Round Table. LT seriously cannot read on the air. The guy needs to learn that all words in the English language are not pronounced phoneticly, unfortunately hooked on phonics worked to well for him. It is painful for me to listen to LT mispronounce words. Rock Star is funny and his Lou Holtz imitation is incredible.
Yes Dunnaway is a Bama homer but you have to respect the fact he knows more about Auburn Football than most avid Auburn fans.

I completely agree. The Finebaum show's best days are behind them. I can't take anymore Daryl from Columbus..."SEE YA PAUL" Sweet sign off you fricking loser, your life revolves around the accomplishments of 18-22 year old men.
Jeff from Chicago is the only regular caller with half a brain.
I was listening to Finebaum one day and my buddy jumped in the car right before Robert from Waterloo came on. After Robert's call my buddy looks at me and says, "You are LITERALLY listening to retards" He was right, I had nothing to come back with....
Also, to the dude who asked about the woman that talked about banging Pat Dye and Coach Bryant...PHYLIS FROM MULGA.... That's the type of shite that put Finebaum on the map...

Actually, I believe that guy is thinking about "Mildred" from Tuscaloosa. Phylis is just a loud-mouthed bammer that Paul and Neal used to joke about having a fling with Bear.
The Mildred character was obviously a put-on by someone and "she" was pretty friggin' hilarious (and borderline vulgar). Mildred called a lot during the WERC days and you could guarantee that Neal would laugh uncontrollably when she called. I think I heard her two or three times during the JOX days.
I still remember a joke she told that put Neal on the floor. "Why did Paul Fingerbaum (sic) cut holes in his pockets? So he could run his fingers through his hair."

Whatever will the Gumps do? The entire state of East Mississippi must be on fire. God help Legend, Tammy and the rest.....ha ha ha.
No more West Georgia sunshine pumping! Wahoo!

You summed it up.
Finebaum was a much better product before it went national. He's hated by most, but when he had Vickers in studio is when his show was at its peak. Phyllis, BOB, IMAN, Shane, Bobby. The day they had the Finebaum face off between Shane and Bobby was classic.
Now, it's more national with people trying to make a name for themselves because of the show. Phyllis called in and put up with Paul's ridicule in the day's of Dubose and Shula. I respect her more than any of today's callers because she wasn't riding the bandwagon.

B.O.B. was the tits. I still remember the '99 Iron Bowl fight he and Phyllis had on the air. B.O.B. explained to Phyllis that him and his buddies had a tradition of going to Legion Field the night before the Iron Bowl. They'd drink a few cold ones, circle around the Bear Bryant statue, and start to sing "We're tinklin' on the Bear."

Wished Finebaum would scrap callers and stick with guests. When he has good guests, he is one of the best interviewers around. having said that..glad to hear the new afternoon yesterday. Much more listenable. Got to where I channel surfed a lot with Finebaum because of certain callers.

What made the show in those early days were the callers. But the "quality" of caller has gone down quite significantly in these last ten years or so. In the 1990s you had people like B.O.B., Mildred, Phyllis, Bama Earle, Shane, Libertee Belle, and quite a few others that made the show very unique and gave it a regional flavor the likes of which today's version of the Finebaum Show can't match.

I had forgot about Bama Earle
He had some calls where he would hand the phone to gas station cashiers while he went to take a piss.

This X 1000.
I had Sirius for a long time. Their afternoon show was crap, and then finebaum moved there and it was even crappier. There's absolutely nothing SEC related on in the afternoons, except finebaum and I hate that Jerry Springer bullshite.

There was a time when Finebaum's show was actually good b/c it centered around interviews, real sports talk, and him actually breaking stories (Terry Bowden firing, Mike DuBose affair, Mike Price fiasco, Jet Gate in AU, etc).
He is very connected and use to provide something of value to his audience. Now he's gone for the least common denominator and his ratings (somehow) actually took an uptic. He had to stay with this schtick so he could keep making the $$. I am fairly certain the journalist in him prefers the older format, while the capitalist in him doesn't mind this current one.

I didnt start listening until 2010 and the first caller I heard was Tammy. However, Im ashamed to admit that Jim from Crestwood is probably my favorite of the current callers. He can say some offensive crap but for the most part he toes the line.
Auburn as West Georgia and when he goes in on Jay Barker and Al Del Greco as West Georgia Waterboys and West Georgia Lemmings is usually one of the better call of the day

I like him, too, because he's one of the few callers who can consistently get under Finebaum's skin. While his ranting and raving signifies nothing more often than not, he can say some things that make me laugh my arse off.

I agree with all of this. Like I said earlier, he's been phoning it in for a while now. He used to be a top notch interviewer who asked hard questions, and he still is when he is interviewing some 26 year old rookie writer from 24/7 Sports. But when he is interviewing anyone of importance, he might as well be throwing batting practice. Go back and listen to his interview with Bobby Petrino after he took the WKU job. He basically gave him a blowjob on the air.

I have a feeling that Finebaum's show will not be the same as it was on JOX.
He can screen out the Darryls and Tammys and try to become more reputable. I wonder how his ratings are nationally.
I also think his show's structure is the best in the history of sports radio. You get interviews, sports talk, and a caller-led portion of the show that no other radio host allows. If he can appeal to a national audience, lose the Alabama focus, and screen out the idiot callers, he can have the best show in the country.
