Comments about LSU being "surrounded by the ghetto" are hilarious. The Mississippi River is on the west, the lakes are on the east, and the North Gates shopping and entertainment is to the north.
Houses near LSU go from anywhere in the 300K-500K range immediately outside the South Gates to around a million across the lakes. Show me another school where that's true.
The only questionable area anywhere near LSU is north of the shopping area outside the North Gates, and that gets pushed back every year.
My list would be LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss. There's a significant drop off after these three.
Many of the campuses in the east are postage stamp sized. Arkansas is small as well, and when you are that small, anything ugly gets magnified.

What is that dotted white line running N/S next to the road labeled 30?

I personally like LSU's campus as did my daughter who had been accepted there only to be involved in a fatal accident during freshman orientation in 2010. The river's a negative though, isn't it? It was pretty nasty the last time I saw it but the LSU campus, along with UA's in T-town is beautiful.

Not a big golfer myself, but I've only heard nice things about it. It's supposed to be pretty difficult too.

I love LSU's campus. I spent a lot of time near it while living in Baton Rouge. I enjoyed the time I spent there.

I was a student at the time and do not remember hearing about. After looking it up, I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

Jesus, that's terrible.
Very sorry for your loss, SouthernB.

I wouldn't term the river as either a negative or a positive. TBH, most student rarely go near it. I'd love LSU to have more of a presence on the river which after all is the largest in the country, but that's not really possible. The Army Corps of Engineers maintains the river banks, and it would be very expensive to build anything to conform with their codes.
There is a nice running track along the river, and you'll see a lot of BR's more famous people using it. Les Miles runs it frequently, for example.

Maybe shithole was harsh (For LSU, not Tennessee. Tennessee is still a shithole). The campus itself has some nice parts but I take into account the surrounding areas. And it is surrounded by ghetto. JMO
congrats for staying off State Street.
the North Gates are shitty, but anything around the Lakes million dollar homes and then the south gates are pretty wealthy too.
in the ghetto is an inaccurate statement by a lot.

The Black Warrior River that runs by UA looks nice and I love what the city has done to the area, but I would never touch that water. I had an environmental class at UA when they had some Olympic trials in Tuscaloosa for the triathlon. The athletes had to swim in the water. We talked about just how bad the water is as they were swimming in it.

Probably list of top 3 for me would be:
Ole Miss
UGA
UA/AU toss up...
Ole Miss is amazing... edges out UGA by just a little. UGA if it were laid out a bit better or if South Campus didn't suck so much, could easily be atop the list. North Campus/DT area is best area of any college town I can recall visiting though I've also heard amazing things about Pepperdine and Princeton as mentioned earlier.
UA/AU... not really sure here. Spent more time in Auburn by a lot and enjoyed it but on my last trip to T-town I had a good time and thought it was nice as well. Still haven't been to Fayetteville.
UF would make the list if I was only interested in the female quotient on campus because the "scenery" is amazing, but campus is pretty meh if you ask me.
Knoxville... dump...ster fire. Claim to fame: Body decomposition study area.
Cootlumbia: Awful... just awful. Almost as bad as the upside down roach that is their football stadium.
Starkvegas... never been. Haven't been convinced that I should.
Lexington: I'd go but I always end up going to the Gorge to climb instead.
Vandy: underwhelming campus but I love Nashville
Red Stick: Never been... maybe 2014?
Newbies: haven't had the chance to visit Mizzou yet. Didn't love the campus at aTm but didn't hate it either... not making the top of the list for sure.

Of the campuses I have been on, I'd say the nicest are Ole Miss, Georgia, Vandrbilt and Arkansas in that order. Bama and Florida are meh. LSU is a shithole in the middle of the ghetto. And Tennessee is just a shithole.
I can tell you've never been to LSU.
