Bryant talked Paterno into accepting the Sugar Bowl invitation so it could be a #1 vs. #2 match-up.
That's not how it went down. Penn State was #1 after Nebraska beat Oklahoma. Paterno wanted to play the highest ranked team. Penn State was all set to go to Miami and play Nebraska until Missouri upset Nebraska the following week. So,with Alabama now #2 Penn State accepted a Sugar Bowl Bid.

My god, stop beating around the bush and say what you really want to say so that I can post a youjelly.gif.

Ah. Thanks for the correction. Either way...Alabama would have played Penn State, with or without the tie between Auburn and Georgia.

The Big Ten conference was also established nearly 40 years before the Southeastern Conference. The SEC was only 30 years old in the 60s. Maybe that had something to do with it?
Gawd, man, that's stubborn.
Because a Big Ten championship meant Pasadena. It meant something, so people planned for it.

Not necessarily. The Big 10 had a "no-peat" rule until 1972. Meaning, if you won the Big 10 one year and then again, the second place team would go. Oh, and you would stay home and not go to a bowl as in the Big 10 you either played in the Rose Bowl or you couldn't go to another bowl until after the 1975 season.

quote:Yeah, but since it is Bama those aren't "real" SEC championships. You probably just claim them.
They were undefeated in conference play in 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1981.

Exactly. He was able to do whatever he wanted, and it helped Alabama out tremendously. And no, I'm not mad. I have nothing against the man since Alabama fans finally moved on and quit worshiping him to the degree they did when I was younger. Granted that's because you guys now have a new coach you worship, but it has made me far more objective in my opinion of Bryant since it's not constantly thrown in my face anymore.

Auburn's only loss in 1972 was to LSU, 35-7. I attended that game at Tiger Stadium. One could argue it was one of LSU's best played games ever under McClendon. Jones had a terrific game. For whatever reason, LSU seemed to play some of its best games against Auburn (1969, 1970, 1972, 1973) during this period.

"Seriously. This is why Bama played Vandy on a near yearly basis through that era. It was a guaranteed extra SEC win."
What's Auburn/Vandy series record?....you don't want to know.
And, but the way, that extra game was Ole Miss, and they were pretty good back then.

It was Bear Bryant once again being smarter and "playing" the rest of the SEC and the SEC Commmish and offices (in B'ham, natch) allowing him.
Don't hate him for pushing the rules if the SEC stepped back and let him run the sand box.

In 1972, Bama was the only team to play 8 SEC games...Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Mississippi State played 7 SEC games...LSU, Tennessee and Vanderbilt played 6.

Ole Miss was the only SEC team Alabama didn't play in 1972.

Every time you guys bring this up, I have to tell you all ignorant fools. Vandy benefits from some ridiculously early wins.

Alabama's worse ever loss came to :rimshot: Vanderbilt.

So we are now expected to beleive that Bama manipulated the number of games played for an occasional advantage but not who they played as well?
They should be considered the King of Astericks!

According to THIS SITE (Stassen LINK), here are the records of SEC teams vs. Vanderbilt prior to the creation of the Southeastern Conference in 1932:
Auburn: 5-9-1
Bama: 4-8
Florida: (the database went kerblooey on this for some reason)
Georgia: 3-6-1
Kentucky: 0-8-1
LSU: 0-2
Mississippi: 0-14
Mississippi State: 0-2-1
Tennessee: 6-15-2

We hear shite all the time about him stocking his unlimited roster with studs just so other teams couldn't get those players. But, what the hell stopped our rivals from doing the same when there were no scholarship limits?
