Then there are those of us old enough to remember when UGA mailed the acceptance letters at the same time and in the same envelope they mailed their applications.

Ha, so Penn St is indeed the 2nd best school in PA! So I guess Cal Tech and Ga Tech are also 2nd fiddle to their other state school coherts as well since they are primarily engineering schools

Also, I've heard students of UPenn call it "UPenn" so I don't think it's out of the ordinary. Also, the school fricking website is www.upenn.edu.

C-Mellon a small liberal arts in P'burgh is ranked higher than Lehigh.

Villanova, LaSalle, Drexel, St Joes, Temple are not better than PSU despite the Philadelphia hyerbole our boy is basing his comments on.

I dk if this has been brought up yet but for everyone on here defending LSU. The reason it's so low is because the state of LA is going in dry on the budget and about to cut $45 million dollars from LSU. They are talking about getting rid of the medical school altogether, and if this happens we are going to lose a shite ton of grant money and possibly our national flagship university status, which = less $$$.
That is all worst case and Jindal actually proposed a state budget that cut no money from LSU but it got shot down.

Personally I am glad I just graduated, because if the state does this to the school, students are going to get fricked over bad

the C in C-Mellon stands for Carnegie, ie Carnegie Tech. not liberal arts.

small yes. well funded. Mellon's money brought the name Mellon to tag on to Carnegie. Carnegie Mellon is still a very good tech school.
quote:

The Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT), consistently ranked among the top 10 engineering school in the U.S., is the perfect place for young men and women who want to learn, discover and invent. It is the oldest and largest college at Carnegie Mellon with approximately 1,400 full-time undergraduates, 550 graduate students and 110 faculty members.

cmu's website

notice they got the agreement wrong with the would-be plural of top ten engineering school (sic). proof they are engineers.

Thats awful. State budgets are tight everywhere but North Dakota. Arkansas has lost millions in funding, but luckily the fundraising is through the roof.

I can't imagine politicians wanting to de-fund the medical school. That's just crazy.

Yea it's really stupid, they are talking about cutting 90 million from the State budget, and taking over half of it from LSU, which is one of, if not the best thing the state has going for it besides hunting/fishing spots.
It makes no sense whatsoever; and whats worse is Louisiana has WAY to many state funded 4 year Universities anyway that they could easily dissolve together (like SUNO and UNO) and easily get away with it.
I mean they should at least turn LSU-Shreveport, and LSU-Alexandria into 2 year schools that can funnel students into the 4 year schools. As it stands most of the 4 year schools in LA need more students.

They should keep LSU, ULL, SELU, ULM, LA-Tech, and Southern (they don't want Jesse Jackson breaking down the door) as public universities. They should dissolve UNO, LSU-S, LSU-A, SUNO, and any other 4 year public University (or turn the LSU's into 2 year schools like LSU-Eunice and filter students into the 4 year schools).
The one thing they SHOULDN'T do is cut $45 million from your BEST school, and one of the most recognizeable things about the state!

I haven't been on here in a while and got this far...go look at collegeboard.com or something like that and you can compare all sorts of categories of admitted students including median SAT/ACT scores and Auburn is right up there with and sometimes ahead of UGA...Bama is consistently third out of those three

In the end it has more to do with what you major in than where you go. Having a Finance degree from Ole Miss will have better job prospects than someone having a History degree from Texas A&M.

Having a degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M (like I do) gives me FAR better job prospects than having a Finance Degree from Ole Miss. What's your point?

Agreed. And I'm not so sure a history degree from A&M isn't better than a finance degree from Ole Miss. Setting up amortization schedules on trailer parks doesn't seem THAT lucrative.

Your, sir, are a disgrace to your alma mater, if indeed you did go to Penn State. I didn't claim any of those schools were better than Penn State. Just mentioned Penn. Penn's noticeable absence from your list that has Penn State #1 makes the list appear suspect--at the very least. That is all. Learn to read. Or stop flaming.

People call it both now (because of the website name, mostly) but it's historic and preferred nickname is PENN.

More of a bad inside joke really. I thought you may have applied or gone to info sessions, in which they asked you to only use PENN or University of Pennsylvania. Someone brought up College Confidential and people always used to start threads about it on there too, so it reminded me.

My point is that choosing the right degree will get you better job prospects REGARDLESS of what school you go to (most of the time). I have nothing against Texas A&M and was just using them as an example. Engineering and Accounting/ Finance degrees consistently have higher demand in the job market compared to say a Creative Writing degree.

Sure it may look better on paper but in the end college is there to make us more competitive in the job market. Having an entry level finance job is going to be easier to find than an entry level job in history or as I said previously in creative writing.

I'm not going to knock Auburn at all as it's a very solid school academically but Auburn folks take the whole "Auburn is SOOO much harder to get into than Alabama" thing to ridiculously delusional levels. I have many friends and acqauintances that went to Auburn and a few of them could barely get through high school much less college. There were a few other students like this that managed to get into Alabama and other SEC schools as well. I'm not sure why a 1 point difference in average ACT score is that big of a deal anyway when an incoming students other academic credentials measure up well.
