LSU was ranked ahead of Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky last year. Not sure what the hell they're looking at this year.
I don't know how they can rate a school that has several Top 3 programs (Veterinary Medicine, Hurricane Meteorological Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Top 10 programs (Petroleum Engineering, Entrepreneurial Science, Internal Auditing, Geophysics, etc.) so low.
Plus a school that is in the top 30 in research, is one of 25 land, sea, and space grant institutions, and has the billion dollar Pennington Biomedical Research Center, plus the top Academic Center for Student Athletes in the nation?

Isn't Mizzou an AAU school?

Really? I'm pretty sure AU has been right on UA's heels these last few years

Yes.
Mizzou's ranking takes a hit for its undergrad admission rate and classroom sizes, generally.
It's a great research school, but only a mediocre undergraduate institution, although that varies widely depending upon what you study.

The Board plans to have us hold steady at 25k for the foreseeable future, while applications have gone up considerably the past few years. We've gotten harder to get into as well.
The HOPE has made much bigger impact with getting from out-of-state, but not nearly as much in-state, which is where I was going with that.

If I am applying for a nice job in a high rise in New York, LA, Chicago, etc., the only SEC school that will make anyone care is Vandy. After that it is a bunch of state schools where the difference in the #50 ranking and the #150 ranking means jack shite.
When it comes to public schools, there are very few where an undergrad degree is seen as prestigious. Cal, Michigan, UVA, and thats about it except for certain degrees at certain places like engineering at GaTech.

we're closer to A&M and UF than Alabama and Auburn
Agreed. UGA is a better overall school than Bama and Auburn. None of the 3 including Florida are anything to brag about though.

A&M and Florida both carry some weight, IMO.

Most reasonable post in this thread.

these rankings are bullshite!
depends what you wish to study, you can bet that moo state, auburn, lsu, a & m are better agriculture colleges than vandy & have vet schools.
remember player from louisiana picked vandy over lsu & said he was going to study journalism, our journalism school does not take a back seat to anyone. same goes for chem eng, petro engr & several other programs

It's Journalism school certainly does (but what a shitty career field for the most part...), perhaps business too, outside of that I think it's mostly limited to regional appeal, sadly.

Depending on the area of study, I could agree with that.
