Delany: If you don't win your division, you can't win it all...

I actually liked Delany's recent proposal for a 4-team playoff using conference champions in the Top6 ( LINK), but today's headline certainly caught my eye...lol

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said Wednesday that any new format shouldn't include a team that doesn't win its division.
"I don't have a lot of regard for that team," Delany said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I certainly wouldn't have as much regard for that team as I would for someone who played nine conference games in a tough conference and played a couple out-of-conference games on the road against really good opponents. If a poll doesn't honor those teams and they're conference champions, I do."
Alabama finished behind LSU in the SEC West last season, but the Crimson Tide got a spot in the Bowl Championship Series title game and beat the Tigers.

Like it would have made a difference for the BIG 10, only difference would have been their conference champ Wisky would've lost to Oregon in round 1 rather than in the Rose Bowl.

I bet he was rooting for that potential OSU-Michigan rematch back in '07.

Just a way to ensure there's only one SEC team in the 4 team playoff....it's bullshite.

The two best teams were in the dome on Jan 9th... Too bad only one team showed up...

The problem with Delaney's position is that once you start to use polls and computers to say the Big 10 champ is more worthy than the Big East champ, if those same polls and computers tell you that the SEC West runner up is more worthy than the Big 10 champ, then you have to honor that. Can't have it both ways.

well Ohio State(wait I mean THE Ohio State) would never be worthy
I like the idea of conference champs in the top 6 getting in, but no one on here will try and say UGA was better than Bama last year

Haven't read all the post but there were 3 teams in the SEC wesst last year that would have beaten any team in the Big 10 last year and might have beaten all of them combined.

He's correct
4 conference champs takes away all media bias and bs
can't win your division/conference shouldn't make some national championship game, don't see what the big problem with that is.....except for one fan base

Top 4 teams. Period. Jim Delaney cant have his cake and fricking eat it too when his conference hasnt won a BCS championship in 10 years and has only won 1 of them all time.
You need to get a little weight before you can start throwing it around.

IMO, it just sounds like he is scared of having two SEC teams in the playoffs.
Yeah, it sucks we got our asses handed to us in the BCSNCG, but the two best teams were playing for the title.
Now, maybe one of the teams didn't show up to play, but that is neither here nor there.

quote:A four team playoff should "attempt" to pit the 4 best teams in the country in that playoff. If 2 of the 4 "best" teams are from the same conference then obviously, they both can't win said conference but still deserve to be in the playoff. And that's all I am going to say about that.
If you don't win your division, you can't win it all...

I agree, plus if you don't win your conference you don't play.

BS. Take 2011 Bama 1 loss and undefeated LSU. Now consider a 10-2 OSU ranked lower then Bama or a S E C, but OSU or a Michigan wins the Big 10 no way do I agree they get in over a higher ranked 1 loss team. No integrity to the process if that is what happens.

Everyone but bama should be ok with this

Under Delaneys system, Bama or LSU could join some pussy conference like the ACC or Big East and be a conference champion every year and easily make the 4 team playoff.
