Was he born with a condition? He was probably in good shape at 40, yes? All things considered I mean

Yes, he was in excellent shape. He had a heart defect.
And if I wasn't on mobile I would RA the heroine comment

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a rare congenital defect; he had been born with a missing left coronary artery, a vessel which supplies blood to the muscle fibers of the heart. His right coronary artery was grossly enlarged and had been compensating for the defect.

Heart attack. I remember we were surprised at the heart attack of a slender healthy former ball player, but, it was said at the time he had heart attack like an old man, no explanation, but that he was born with it probably.

A true legend

This could be the hoops version of shooting your age in golf.
A legend who averaged more PPG in college than his years at death. Only other I can think of is Lin Bias and I'm not sure you could call him anything close to a legend.

His last words were "I feel great".

Maravich died suddenly at age 40 during a pick-up game as a consequence of a previously undetected congenital heart defect. One of the youngest players ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Maravich was cited by the Hall as "perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history..
Had the pleasure of watching him play against Auburn and John Mengelt. Mengelt scored 60 against Bama on Feb 14, 1970, of course Pistol scored 69 vs Bama a week earlier Feb. 7, 1970 which is the second most in a game in the history of D-1 basketball.
List of players scoring 60 or more in a game.. (Pete has a few here)
60 points in a game

Played biddy-ball all-stars vs one of his sons. He could not ball like Pops, but still pretty cool.
I had all of his Hoops videos. I freaking loved 'em. Loved hearing him talk about the game of Basketball.
