This led to the use of the nickname, and in 1935, the first Bulldog mascot was adopted, and the first "Bully" became part of the squad.

Sadly, his career was cut short when a campus bus tragically ended his life, but the nickname stuck

wow. didn't know that

Not a Flame, just a question! I seem to remember that at one time the name "Chinese Bandits" was used for LSU. Was this used for the team, or just the offensive, or defensive, line? I'm thinking this was back in the late 50's or 60's.

Chinese Bandits were the DF unit in 58 when we won the NC. A good friend of mine named Lepord was the starting Guard.

Whatever the case may be, between UGA and Hairy, the Dawgs have two of the best mascots in the country.

Chinese Bandits – Whenever LSU forces a turnover or gets the ball back via a defensive stop, the LSU band plays the Chinese Bandits tune. Tiger fans bow to the defense while the tune is played. The term "Chinese Bandits" originated as the nickname that LSU Coach Paul Dietzel gave to the defensive unit he organized in 1958, which helped LSU to win its first national championship. The next season, the 1959 Chinese Bandit defense held their opponents to an average of only 143.2 yards per game. No LSU defense since has done better.

leave it to the Bleacher Report to make up their own facts....

Gen. Thomas "The Gamecock" Sumter fought in the Revolutionary War, so he would have never come in contact w/ Robert E. Lee. R.E. Lee's dad, Lighthorse Harry Lee did fight in the South Carolina campaign during the Rev. War, which is where BR may be confused, however it is widely reported that Gen. Thomas Sumter got his nickname from the British General Cornwallis. Sumter was a small man, but when the British burned his house (a la The Patroit w/ Mel Gibson), he went apes#$t on a killing rampage against the British.

Bastards didn't even answer the question.

quote:

Some would tell you that the Bulldogs copied their nickname from Yale due to strong ties between Georgia's founders and that venerable institution. Others would tell you that a couple of writers started referring to the team as "Bulldogs" in 1920, and the name stuck. Whatever the case may be, between UGA and Hairy, the Dawgs have two of the best mascots in the country.

BR is basically saying, "well there's a few theories out there, but we don't really know the answer so whatevs"

Shortly thereafter, the university adopted the nickname "Tigers" in honor of a group of militia from the state nicknamed "The Missouri Tigers."

On a side note, if you think the Tigers will melt in the SEC, think again.

James Franklin is the real deal and will help them to a decent finish in the conference.

James Franklin is Vandy's coach. And also Mizzou's QB.

Interesting. And, amazingly, they got Auburn's right.

What I don't get is how he's determining the "top 50" programs and the order that they're in. Not making much sense to me.

I don't think it is an actual ranking of programs, just a random list of information, at least I hope not because that would easily be the worst ranking of programs ever.
