Baton Rouge is not a college town. It's a large town (smallish city) with a college in it.

Athens is the only SEC town that I was actually blown away by. The rest are just average.

I guess this yo-yo brain has not experienced the local bar scene in Baton Rouge, the casinos, some of the most beautiful golf courses and parks in the country, the gorgeous state capital grounds, one of the most renowned municipal zoos in the nation, downtown and LSU museums and galleries, and ante-bellum plantations and other tourist sites, one of the largest malls in the South, and wonderful restaurants.
And of course there is one more thing that BLOWS AWAY every other college town in America = by far the best food and tailgating anywhere.....as well as the loudest and most deafening college football venue on the planet.....

Two words: crime rate

This top-10 list was based on "livability" and was catered more towards grown, professional types with kids. It wasn't tailored to most of us on the SECr. I'm not saying that the things you said about BR aren't true, because they are. I'm just saying that BR's crime rate alone would keep it off of this list.

I feel like the people that make these lists haven't actually been to the cities. Anyone who has been to Athens is going to put it near the top. Anyone who has been to Auburn, won't put it in a top 10. If you've been to Bozeman Montana then there is no way you leave it out of this list. I live in Athens and I love Athens but if I had a choice between Bozeman and Athens, Bozeman 100%.

I think Boulder is great, but it costs a mint to live there.

I don't like it either, hence the "grasping for straws" comment.

Most partying is done at people's houses anyway. I had way more fun at house parties near the square than on the actual square itself, but maybe that's because for me the Square was more about the restaurants than the bars.

I dunno. Whatever. Blue laws suck, but we still had a shitload of fun regardless.

It's unfortunate that they don't reailze - 99.9% of the violent crime in the entire 600,000 BR metro area happens in north Baton Rouge, not near campus and downtown and the nicer areas.

Much like 99.9% of the violent crime and murders in the 1.2 million NO metro area happen in the inner city and N.O. east crack house and project areas, not near the tourist areas, downtown, garden district, uptown, convention and warehouse district, and lakeview.

Even though I prefer Oxford because it feels like home and I'm always there with old friends, Athens is the better college town. More bars, more restaurants, more live music, more of a diverse crowd (basically that means more hippies), and so forth.

That's how it is in most cities, though.

I live in DC. An overwhelming majority of DC's violent crime happens across the Anacostia River in the southeastern quadrant of the district. On the other hand, the northwestern quadrant, especially the part west of Rock Creek, is practically void of violent crime.

It sucks, because people always ask "oh, isn't that a violent city," the same way people think about Baton Rouge and New Orleans, completely unaware that the violence is more or less confined in certain areas or neighborhoods.

Would imagine that shite-hole, Tuscaloosa, is probably ranked somewhere alongside Cleveland and Buffalo.

Probably.

In Fayetteville, its more adult on Dickson/Downtown from 7-10pm. The college kids don't really even get started good until 10pm. I remember being in school and tyically hitting Dickson around 11pm. We house-partied before 11, and closed the bars down at 2:00.
