I'm not sure what the big knock on Auburn is. It has some of the better public schools in the region and is growing like a mofo with property values higher than average (for the region).

Probably for the same reasons I don't understand the knocks on Tuscaloosa by most Auburn fans.

i know people like to bash towns just because of their hatred for the schools, but i honestly haven't been to one that i actually thought was a shithole. they all have nice areas and they all have crappy areas. the only one i didn't really like was starkville, but it wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

Starkville is the worst in the SEC, but it's really not that bad. I think it has improved a lot in the last 10 years.

I actually like both. I lean a little more to Auburn, but only because I like the small town atmosphere.

Great golf too, with Auburn Grand National (R. Trent Jones Golf Trail), University Course, and Saugahatchee.

Well the knock is usually targeted towards college life.

I personally wouldn't want to live in auburn full time, but i had a great four years.

Just a difference of preference. I don't need 100 bars to be happy, they all serve beer right? So what makes 100 of them so great?

I also enjoyed the fact that it was just the college for the most part and i didn't have to deal with the other bullshite. Close enough to atlanta to be there in time for anything exciting happening, and secluded enough to where it was just college events.

Any place where the bars close at midnight is not a place I want to be for too long.

40% of the time that i go out, i get to the bars after midnight. that would be miserable

I guess this yo-yo brain has not experienced the local bar scene in Baton Rouge, the casinos, some of the most beautiful golf courses and parks in the country, the gorgeous state capital grounds, one of the most renowned municipal zoos in the nation, downtown and LSU museums and galleries, and ante-bellum plantations and other tourist sites, one of the largest malls in the South, and wonderful restaurants.
And of course there is one more thing that BLOWS AWAY every other college town in America = by far the best food and tailgating anywhere.....as well as the loudest and most deafening college football venue on the planet.....

It's a livability ranking. BR isn't in the running because it's hard to stay alive there.

My personal favorite of all of the RTJ courses. Moore's Mill is nice in Auburn too.

This is a few years old, but...

I can't believe they mentioned Pin Oaks.

I feel like the people that make these lists haven't actually been to the cities. Anyone who has been to Athens is going to put it near the top. Anyone who has been to Auburn, won't put it in a top 10. If you've been to Bozeman Montana then there is no way you leave it out of this list. I live in Athens and I love Athens but if I had a choice between Bozeman and Athens, Bozeman 100%.

I have always heard that Missoula was a lot better than Bozeman.

I've been. I felt safe, too.

But damn, man. Just hang out on the OT and it's impossible to not notice at least one thread per week talking about a rape/murder/molestation/etc that went down in BR.

I don't know about you, but if I was a retiree looking for a place to relocate, or if I was a young couple looking to uproot with a family, or if I was any sane person, I'd want to move to a town with a low crime rate. But I'd also want to move to an AREA with a low crime rate.

All things being equal.

You get used to it. People are all stunned about the bars closing when they do, as if Ole Miss students go out at 11:30 and then say "awww shucks!" when the bar closes. We just start drinking earlier. What's the big fricking deal?

If you party from 6 until midnight versus 9 until 3? What's the difference? You still partied for 6 hours?

Seriously, it really only is a problem to people who aren't used to it. It sucks, in that I wish they never closed, but it hasn't kept us from having fun.
