Won't start until next year at the earliest.

With the current oaks unlikely to survive beyond this fall, the school's Committee to Determine the Future of Rolling Toomer’s Corner presented a two-part plan to Gogue: one, that the trees would be permanently replaced by one or more similar-sized specimens (likely a different species of oak), and two, that a second committee would be assigned to determine a temporary solution for rolling the corner during the three-to-five year period before the new oaks were ready. Gogue signed off on the plan this week.

treehouse bar /statue idea from NGT was better. Go Swiss family Robinson down there.

As for that temporary solution, it's still too early for many specifics. ("There’s not a tremendous rush," Clardy said, since the oaks would last through 2012.) But the final recommendation is likely to be something man-made, potentially a system of wires.

Me no likey this idea.

Here's the tree sculpture outside the new Crystal Bridges Museum up here:
Perhaps one of those. Not sure how much it cost, though.

I like the wire idea. Takes it back to the true, I repeat, true start of the tradition.

It was worth the trees not surviving since it caused the Bama fan base embarrassment.

The actual trees aren't replaceable. Sure, other trees could be planted in place of the originals but they wouldn't be the same.
Suppose some lunatic Auburn fan took a sledgehammer to the captain's cement prints outside of Denny Chimes. How would you respond to someone saying "oh well, it's just cement. That is replaceable?"
