Just wanted to share some things so everyone has a safe fun time in this great city. Some of this stuff might sound over the top but take it from someone who has lived here pretty much my entire life it is useful.
* If you can avoid it do not walk anywhere downtown by yourself or just a guy and a girl by themselves. Try to avoid dimly lit streets in the quarter. There are streets where you always see people either going in or out the quarter on. Stay on those streets.
* There will be cops everywhere, if you are lost or need directions, help, etc. ask them. Going up to random people on the street is not a good idea.
* Bourbon street is fun IF you are in a group. Even locals know not to go down there with just a couple of people. I would recommend having at least 3 people in your group. Never stray by yourself, you are only asking for trouble.
* If you feel like downtown is just too crowded which it will be, take a streetcar uptown. There are countless restaurants and bars up that way. Also Veterans Blvd in Metairie has everything you might want to do in one day(Shopping, Restaurants, Bars) there also. It's about a 10 minute ride from downtown.
* Last but not least, common sense goes along way. I love this city and will never leave but there are bad things all around. If something doesn't feel right or you think something stupid is about to happen. 9 times out of 10 your gut feeling will be right so trust it and get the hell away from there.
I hope all of y'all have fun, be safe, and most importantly lose graciously monday night.
If anyone has any questions a lot of posters on this site will have the answers so just ask.
Edit to add: A lot of streets in N.O. are one way streets. Pay attention to signs, it can be very confusing and you will end up going the wrong way if not. Also try to stay on main streets(well lit). Side streets can turn into a nightmare if you end up on the wrong one. Thanks Truth.

Solid advice.
Should also try to stick to major streets when driving through the city. Going up the wrong side street in certain areas in the city can turn in to a nightmare.

Yea, nothing worst than hearing about something happening to a tourist on the news. Just hoping everyone makes it home safe.

SIGH. YOU MAKING OUT DOWNTOWN AND BOURBON STREET TO BE LIKE IRAQ? COME ON MAN. like any big city it has its bad areas. i doubt any gumps will be in those areas. they will be fine in downtown. just use common sense.

Of course its not Iraq, but its not Alabama either. I have a feeling it is going to be like Mardi Gras out their the next few days and these are all things locals would pay attention to during Mardi Gras. Just thought I would pass it along.

You just described Birmingham. I'm sure they'll manage.

Birmingham is nothing like NO. You have a pocket or neighborhood in B'han that is rough and sticks out like a sore thumb. New Orleans is a mixture of good things, and then right around the corner, it can turn into Iraq.

as long as they stay out of the projects(which they should not be near anyway, you can google tosee where they are located people)) and central city they should be fine downtown in the warehouse district, Central Business district or the french quarter.

Solid post. Excellent advice. Note the predators, avoid them, and definitely don't engage them.
Break it down, and it looks pretty much like this. Don't stray from the herd. The predators like to pick off stragglers, weak, young, and old.
Surviving NO/FQ is a lot like surviving on the Serengeti. Beware the predators and don't appear weak, isolated, confused, or inattentive of your surroundings, or this will be you, more or less.

You pretty much described every big city i can think of. Oh and as a person from Houston you can thank me for taking all of your trash from 2005.

Good post. And don't fool yourself, Louisiana has its share of crazy Updykes so don't be the moron and talk too much shite on LSU - remember where you are.

I will be arriving at the train station and staying at the Hilton. I plan on going to the casino, game and bourbon street. Here is a map. Tell me what streets are not safe. TIA

Downtown New Orleans is very safe. The CBD, Warehouse District and Quarter are among the safest parts of the city actually....I mean sure, don't go wondering out of the quarter at night and cross Rampart St, but otherwise they'll be fine.
