How much does simply winning SEC championship mean to fans?

I ask this because of the amount of posts I'm reading about a potential rematch between LSU and Alabama where it seems as though it would merely be an added "obstacle" for LSU to have to play in the SEC championship game.
I think everyone agrees that this scenario would make Bama's path to the BCS championship game easier etc etc and there's already plenty of debate about that in other threads anyway.
I'm more interested in how the SEC championship game is really being talked about only as it helps or hinders a team in winning the overall BCS and not as any big deal in and of itself?
Does it really mean much to fan bases of programs like LSU, Bama, Florida etc to be SEC champions?

well...there's only fans of 6 schools that really know.

I like being the champion of the best conference in America. To me that means a lot. You should direct this towards arky fans though.

Well when your conference is competing for the national championship for over half a decade the conference championship looses it's luster.
If you're not one of these team's, then it should be a huge deal to be the best in the most dominating conference ever.

It means a lot to me. I wouldn't be upset if Alabama somehow won a national title without winning the SEC though.

I'v been thinking about this too. LSU beat Alabama and will get a chance to win the SEC. The Bama game wouldn't be pointless if there was a rematch.

Coming from an Arkansas fan it would be absolutely amazing. The SEC title is a more legitimate title than the BCS title anywho.

We've been playing for national titles too many straight years, so it in itself doesn't seem as important. I imagine it would be to one of the six (8) teams who's never won it before.

same here. It's by far the best conference in the country by a wide margin.

This may be more the heart of it. Expectations are a NC and the SEC game is more of a rite of passage on that quest since 2006.
I'm not sure that it's only because last year Auburn was a heavy favorite and this year LSU would be as well either. Even the Alabama-Florida games seemed more likely to be celebrated as BCS Championship play-in games than anything else.

It's the 2nd most prestigious title in college football. It means a hell of a lot.
