Doubt it happens this time, but you'd think with the talent over the years, they'd have had at least one.

Dareus will be Bama's 1st D-lineman took in the 1st round since Curry and Copeland.. that's a long stretch.
fricking wrong board.

If Alabama's Marcell Dareus is selected No. 1 in this year's draft, he would become the first SEC defensive lineman to be the first pick. The highest an SEC lineman has been drafted is second, where the Chiefs took Kentucky DE Art Still in 1978.
When Still was drafted, he was only the second SEC player to be the first defensive lineman to come off the board. The first had been LSU's Earl Leggett, whom the Bears made the 13th player picked in 1957.
Since then, eight SEC players have been the first defensive lineman to be selected -- Alabama's Mike Pitts (16th in 1983 by the Falcons), Tennessee's Reggie White (fourth in 1984 by the Eagles), Alabama's John Copeland (fifth in 1993 by the Bengals), Florida's Kevin Carter (sixth in 1995 by the Rams), LSU's Anthony McFarland (15th in 1999 by the Buccaneers), Florida's Gerald Warren (third in 2001 by the Browns), Kentucky's Dewayne Robertson (third in 2003 by the Jets) and LSU's Tyson Jackson (third in 2009 by the Chiefs).

Auburn DT Nick Fairley's selection in the first round on Thursday night will be a rare event: Auburn has had only one previous player listed as a defensive lineman -- either defensive tackle, defensive end or noseguard -- picked in the first round. The Minnesota Vikings chose Auburn DE Gerald Robinson with the 14th selection of the 1986 draft.
In case you're wondering, neither of Auburn's Outland Trophy winners was a first-round pick. Tracy Rocker went in the third round in 1989 to the Redskins, and Zeke Smith was a fourth-round pick by the Colts in 1959.

fricking wrong board.

It's actually complementary of Lsu, showing that they've had the most D-linemen drafted in the 1st round.

I had always thought TRacey Rocker was the #1 overall pick.

LSU might have been the 1st in 2008. 2 Auburn players (I think Ramsey & Ziemba sp?) put an illegal chop block on Dorsey . They crippled him enough that he was not up to par the rest of the year. This certainly lowered his draft status from his original projections.
I don't think a penalty was even called on the play and an official was looking right at it!!!

The article listed players who went as the first d-lineman off the board. Who went ahead of Dorsey? Jevon Kearse? Just who in holy hell went ahead of Reggie White?

How many D-linemen have been drafted first overall in the history of the draft?

A chop block, you say? First I heard about.it. Did it really happen, or is this just some urban legend.

It dominated the headlines in BR and a lot of national coverage.

Just Google something like " Auburn illegal chop block on Dorsey ". Plenty of video on it too. Tuberville denied it was intentional (what else would he say) but he admitted that the officials blew it by not calling it. Dorsey was helped off the field when it occurred in the 3rd quarter and did not return. This really helped Auburn keep it so close. Dorsey was a beast. The national , regional and local press really gave auburn a bad time about it.
They didn't learn their lesson though.Auburn was caught doing it again and had it called on them later that year or the next.

Aundray Bruce?
I'm guessing they are considering him more of a linebacker coming out of college, even though he played DE in the pros.

Reggie White was the first defensive lineman drafted that year.
Chris Long was drafted 2nd by the Rams, Dorsey went 5th.
