Best/worst fan experiences at away venues

Both of mine happen to be at LSU.
Worst
2003. I was 17 years old making my first trip with my friend from school, my aunt, and my cousin. Me and my friend took our signs to Gameday and were physically and verbally abused for hours. Keep in mind we're 17 year old kids. Someone jumped up and took my sign and ripped it to shreds. Someone drew on my friend's back with a sharpie. People were cussing us out inches from our faces. When we left to go back to the car people were intentionally going out of their way to shoulder into us. It was the worst I've ever seen a group act towards 2 people who absolutely were not threatening or looking for trouble.
Best
2008. Now 4 years older and in college I went to Baton Rouge with a foul disposition and bad intentions. I was looking to fight once I crossed the Louisiana border. But this was a complete and total 180 from 2003. As soon as we got out of the car people asked us where we were from, if we had a safe drive, etc. People were friendly, hospitable, and offered plenty of food and drinks. Our group combined with an LSU group and we had a solid tailgate of about 30 people. This one group had a massive jamabalaya spread that they were handing out left and right. It was the best I've ever been treated on the road.
Now granted, a lot had to do with the crowd we were exposed to both times. Obviously if you're around the college aged kids at ANY campus there are going to be a fair share of assholes. In 2008 we parked with an older crowd so that was a big part of my good experience.

This is a a perfect example on why not to lump an entire fanbase on one experience. Granted some fanbases are more consistent than others.

I mostly hang out in RV City for FL/GA games because the crowd is older and much more civilized. When you get out to the $10 parking lots the drunken screamers from both sides are out in full force. You get what you pay for.

Best: Ole Miss 2008. Not going into detail here.
Worst: UF 2008 after the 56-6 beatdown in the rain.

Were the drunks out in full force?
I've only seen one opposing fan get hassled and I told the drunk Gator to chill the eff out and treat our guests like they are in his home.

Ha ha! I knew I liked you (despite your AU fanhood) when I saw the "Flight Suit Up" pic. This is funny too.

no joke. same everywhere every time. and all schools have the gamut of fans, from cool to absolute assholes. some people are immature and don't handle competiton well, esp. when they imbibe too much. and yes, us old farts are great to tailgate with.

Posted on 4/20/11 at 10:38 am to WG_Dawg
i had the same experience.
@ Auburn 2004 - terrible. jackass fans acting like complete jerks. got into a shoving match with some AU frat boy douche, cuss words hurled at us, etc..
@ Auburn 2010 - a lot more friendly atmosphere. even had an Auburn fan come up to me and my buddy after the game asking if we had a good time and say that sometimes they get a bad rap as fans but he wants us to know they're not all like that.

They weren't that bad, but the rain sucked, and we got destroyed, so it was just a shitty day in general. Loved UF in 2006 and 2010 though.

As long as there is alcohol you're going to get some idiots anywhere in the country.
So basically you're only safe at BYU games and at that point you're surrounded by a cult.

Yeah I know that's a major part of it. Just like if an away fan tried to tailgate on Millege Ave in Athens I'm sure they would have a similar experience to mine in 2003. I just couldn't believe the physical nature of their actions towards 2 high school kids who were in no way looking for any trouble.

roadGator,
you're letting a lot of people down by changing you avatar. personally, i read your posts because of the "blondes going fishing" theme.

Best
2010 Auburn Pre 2nd half
AU fans showed us respect and really I got along with everyone. Great venue and everything. Went to a frat party the night before, tailgated with some AU buds pregame and had no real issues.
2007 GT
Honestly at this point we were so good and tech was so bad all the gnats i talked too were mellower than usual and actually everyone had a good time. My quips about how bad do you have to be to put up a banner of the humanitarian bowl in your stadium was met with laughs
Worst
2008 Jax
You'd think turds would be more used to winning. Nope. I drove 6 hours that morning following playing a football game the night before so I was beat as hell. What was I rewarded with but one of our finest GA/FLA efforts in a 49-10 raping. I told my buddy frick it we came this far so we were 2 of probably 1,000 who remained to watch that pathetic excuse of a Georgia game. Of course turd fans actually left their side to come and talk shite to us on our side as if getting murdered wasn't enough. Post game i saw a good amount of fans (a lot were actually among turds with now georgia participation), had a beer bottle pelted at my head, and just really the nastiness you usually see out of hill billy gator folk
2003 SEC Title
i was only 13 but LSU fans were none too classy. probably learned 1/4 of my cursing vocabulary that night, almost had a beer poured on me, and really grew to hate LSU that night and sadly we were in Georgia
2009 GT
The Gnats thought they had us finally so they were heaping on insults. Tech fans came from the woodwork everywhere only to do what they do best, lose to us. Following that the techies really could not handle it like usual. I had 4 fans try to start a fight, many insults heaped on, saw many techies just basically losing it. Probably didn't help that i was talking a little too much trash and was in the tech section. Probably the most hostile a fan base had gotten that I had seen live. Tech fans were ready to reverse the rivalry that night and they were livid things were back to normal. A lot of pissed people that day.
2010 AU post fight/fairleyness
ya you guys turned pretty nasty quick haha

Young drunks = trouble
Old drunks = a bit less trouble
Young buzzed = fun
Old buzzed = looking at coeds and no trouble at all
This is how shiite really works.

Worst: My GF at the time and I were walking back to my buddy's apartment after the '07 Iron Bowl and we were passing toomer's corner, and this fricking humongous thing of toilet paper(think of the ones that you see in gas stations. yes, the ones that are as big around as a hub cap.) comes flying across the sky and hits my ex GF right in the head. Almost knocked her out. Yeah, frick that tree.

Best - LSU in 2008. GREAT game. GREAT atmosphere. Fans were far better than I anticipated in terms of general interaction. My buddy had just purchased a new BMW earlier in the week and wanted to drive it down for the game. I suggested that he buy some LSU magnets at a LA gas station and remove the Bama plate to keep it from getting keyed. He took his chances and nothing happened. Fans at game and around stadium were cool too.
Worst - TIE
AU 1997. I was 19 and Bama lost to AU 17-15 b/c the idiot HC didn't wear a headset and had no clue that the idiot OC called a screen pass on 3rd and medium with less than 2 minutes to go. Ball was fumbled and AU kicked a FG to win. Then outside the stadium we passed an apartment complex where other college kids shot bottle rockets at our group and threw beer bottles at us. Many fists were thrown that night (weird thing was, I was actually spending the weekend in AU with a buddy of mine who went to school there and had a blast partying most of the time - idiotic minority in any fanbase give the cool majority a bad rap)
UT 2006 - should have won this game. Castille got a pick and got walked down by Eric Ainge instead of scoring. Shula kicked FG on 4th and G from 1. Team hated decision. I did too. I sat in Knox traffic leaving the game and not thinking about what I was doing enhaled a cigar in like 15 minutes (hey, i bought it i planned to smoke it any way even if we didn't win). I'm not a smoker. Got crazy sick on side of I40.
