I admit. Been a while since I was in college but for you that are in college now. Would $500 be a life changer to you right now? Even if you are not that well off or have parents who can back you, lets face it, $500 would not last long.
My point being. Do these "boosters" who supposedly pass along a hundred or two to these kids, really think they are helping or is it just a ego thing?

ego thing. That's all it was to Logan Young at the time and why he and Tennstud bragged about what they did, to each other.

Sounds like an admission to me.

$500... Not really. I mean it would probably be gone by the end of the week. However, you have to look at the fact that the kids in question receiving this money are no where close to well off. $500 is in some cases the most money these kids have ever seen.

$500 would do me for awhile. I am in a fraternity and get meals every weekday, just as athletes get meals everyday. My parents probably supply me with around $600 a semester (after books), I spend a few hundred of my own on random stuff and bar trips. Though I can be pretty stingy and try not to eat expensively and buy cheap stuff. It's definitely not a "life-changer", but if I got a couple hundred every week of football season or so, it would definitely be more than I'd be used to spending.

When I was in college, I would go to work, make between 50-150 bucks. I would spend the majority that night going out. I would have some left over for meals and stuff. By the time I went back to work I would basically be broke again. My parents paid my rent but I paid everything else. So a few hundred bucks would have allowed me to actually buy something I needed like clothes or whatever. 500 bucks would not have been a life changer. It would have been gone quick, but a few hundred extra bucks a week would have made my life much better.

I'm also in a fraternity so just like athletes I get all my meals paid for, but $500 would be nice to have because it would mean I could go out basically any night I wanted for a month.

If someone just randomly handed me $500 in college it would've gone straight towards rent. If I didn't have to pay rent like athletes, I think I could stretch it for a while.

$500 for me would have been a big deal. My parents paid for everything: tuition, books, meal plan, rent, etc, but my dad would not pay for "recreation" as he called it. Basically, the little bit of money I made as a page in the SC State House, plus the grandparents slipping me $100 every time I went back home were the only spending money I had.

Probably not to most students - but there are a ton of student athletes that came from absolutely nothing, so if you look at it from their point of view - it actually could be a lot of money. Some have never seen that much at once in their life!

If you live in dorms (as the players do) or a fraternity house where you generally don't pay your own utility bills, then most definitely yes.
I'm just having trouble seeing what is "systematic" about an under-the-table money handshake.

$500 bucks is a months worth of work for me but I probably spend it all quickly because it is just extra money so I would by something expensive I have been wanting

considering they don't pay for much to begin with....i'd say it could go a long way

Somewhat what I was thinking. Most people just blow "found" money. And it wont change when your older. I have found that my spending habbits are similar though I have been out of college and working for 20 years.
Personally, I dont think the givers are thinking they are helping. It just makes them feel like a bad arse.

Hell, I'd like a dollar. Free money is free money.

500 bucks is a lot of money for a college kid, especially one who plays sports and has no job.
part ego, but mostly trying to keep the kid happy.

Are you admitting something here?

When I was in college gas was less than $1/gallon so it would have gone a long way. Not as much to me now a days, but it's some very nice spending money to have.
