I think we're a top ten team, not #1

-LSU replaces their best players on defense with underclassmen who (arguably) have played just as good at times, if not better.

-LSU replaces their best RB/WR. See first statement.

-LSU's biggest competition in the West (AU/ARK/UA) replace stellar QB's and important key personnel on offense/defense.

-LSU's getting a new OC. Thank Gawd.

-With LSU's SOS, They could lose 1, maybe 2 games and still likely finish in the Top 5.

Why so defensive? Why does a legit question bother you so much? Is it because we actually went undefeated and didn't have to rely on computers and luck to win one?

I'm well aware of the struggles Auburn should have next year and I'm sure it could get ugly in BR. I'm just curious how a team that doesn't have a clue who it's QB or OC is going to be and is losing it's most productive and experienced players on defense can be preseason #1. Top ten? Sure. #1, that's a tough sell.

I would pick LSU as my preseason favorite to win the west.. returning QB, quality lines, etc... Arkie losses Mallet, Auburn loses Cam, Bama loses a lot of offensive production in Ingram, Julio and McElroy, plus Darius... So if you are good enough to win the west, you are good enough to win the SEC, and then you win the MNC......

This is my thought as well. We know preseaon doesn't mean anything, but if the SEC has won the MNC the last 5 years and the West has the stronger contenders, then whoever is picked to win the West should be legit.

You're absolutely right. LSU should be ranked no higher than 19th, and should be projected to go no better than 4-4 in SEC play.

Better?

D's are always ahead in the first few games.... This gives us a Major advantage IMO.

LSU and BAMA will have a defense next year IMO that just stands out nationally as better than the rest

They are definitely top 5.

Peterson - Claiborne, Matheiu, Loston, Reid, Simon, Brooks, Taylor (let's iginore Hatcher). That is a ton of playmaking experience back to be down on that departure.

Nevis - When it comes to DT, LSU has been the #1 program in the SEC at churning these out over the past decade. Still have Downs and Montgomery with lots of experience and Freak coming in as an early enrollee to probably the easiest position on defense for a freshman to come in and play. DE will be a strength with this team due to Montgomery, Adams, Aghayere, Mingo, Edwards all returning.

Ridley - Always talented RBs at LSU. Ridley was an example of that in his first season as starter. Oline returns 4 starters and multiple backups with experience. All TEs return. Ford, Ware and Blue all looked good at times this season.

Sheppard - Biggest lost and unknown situation. LB is Chavis's specialty though. All other LBs are back.

Jasper - 2nd biggest lost and unknown behind Shep. We worried about this after David and actually improved. Maybe Miles is good with the kicking game. We will have to see.

QB - JJ will start. Although criticized, he is a 2 year starter with a good record. He improved drastically in his ability to run the ball during the year. That makes him dangerous to keep the offense on the field. Slightly improved his passing but should have better coaching here with Crowton gone. All targets but Tolliver are back.

Overall, this team has a strong foundation and that is where the hype is coming from. At least, that is how I see it.

From my admittedly not fully educated perspective you still don't have an established quarterback, you just lost your most productive offensive player

Compared to '07, the Tigers are far advanced in both areas. It can easily be argued that the loss of Russel, Bowe and Davis(3 first round picks) from the '06 offense was looked upon by many as being far more insurmountable for a team predicted by many to vie for the BCS title. Along came Flynn,(2 previous starts), Hester, Doucet, Lafell and Dickson to set most of the major offensive records in LSU's books. Even if Ridley goes, the returning backs are plenty talented to run behind the best Oline since '07. JJ, JL and Mettenberger have a ton more experience combined than Flynn and RP had. Toliver is a big loss but many feel Randle is already better and a host of very talentd receivers join him. Defensively, well most of the 20 freshmen who played in the Cotton Bowl were defensive guys. Superior young talent, will be bolstered by a bigger defensive front and the fastest corp of linebackers in the SEC. BTW, I don't personally pick the Tigers to be #1 but you asked how many(including talking heads) feel they are worthy for that status. FWIW, the biggest shoes to fill are those of Jasper, the nation's leader in FG and possibly the best ST player in LSU's history.

The same line of thinking that makes most Auburn fans I talk to think Auburn is not going to miss a beat with Trotter and not Cammy Cam

#1 seems too high to me, top 5 maybe too high

Top 10 seems like common sense tho

We lost some playmakers on defense and are apparently losing Ridley but return most of the team

Is top 5 a fair expectation by the end of next year? Maybe, maybe not depending on what Oregon and the rest of the SEC looks like

But I'd be disappointed to see LSU finish outside the top 10

we belong in the top 10 preseason but IMO not #1. i think 5-7 is more accurate. losing shep on defense will be the biggest hit. he was the leader of the entire team and a really good LB. someone will have to step up in that spot who hasn't really played much. replacing leadership will be a bigger deal for LSU in 11' than replacing talent.

ridley was great for this past year's team because he was really good at carving out tough yards and we often faced 9 in the box. IF our qb play improves (which obviously everyone is banking on hence the preseason rankings) then we will have a more balanced offense with more big play opportunities out of the run game. alot of LSU fans feel that would be better suited for our younger backs who are more big play threats.

LSU won eleven games with almost no play from the QB position.

Think about it. Our QB threw for 6 TDs in the regular season and we won 11. Amazing.

Its not like LSU fans are the one's who started this #1 BS. Go ask CBS. The reality is preseason rankings (like recruiting titles) mean shite, so who cares.
