Saban: Most rumors about assistants leaving are GARBAGE

actually, he said invalid.

Before a single question was asked Thursday night, Saban took firm hold of the press conference, confronting many of the rumors. He declared most of the sourced information as "invalid."
Kirby Smart to Florida? Sal Sunseri to Pittsburgh? Bo Davis to Florida? Jim McElwain to Texas?
So far, none of those reports has panned out.
Every coach rumored to be a target for another job was at the Crimson Tide's first practice Thursday to prepare for the Capital One Bowl against Michigan State Jan. 1 in Orlando.
Saban expressed frustration with several reports concerning potential coaching moves. Those stories also referenced attempts to reach Saban, though an Alabama spokesman said none were made.
"A source close to the situation said something that is totally invalid," Saban said in mocking the reports. "Furthermore, they say 'nobody was available for comment' when nobody tried to get a comment. Nobody called. Nobody asked. Nobody said, 'Are you available?' Coach Saban wasn't available for comment? Nobody called or asked. How do you know I wasn't available? What is 'a source close'? When you ask me a question, I can't wait to answer one like that. I'll say, 'A source close said.'"
Two stories Saban confirmed were true involved McElwain's interview for the Colorado head coaching vacancy, and Curt Cignetti's interview for the same post at Kent State.
A Kent State spokesman said Thursday via e-mail the search is down to three finalists, but it is unknown if Cignetti is a finalist.
One of the hottest stories this week spawned from a one-source account stating Smart, Saban's defensive coordinator, was offered the same job by good friend and new Florida coach Will Muschamp.
In his introductory press conference, Muschamp shot down the report, saying no one has been offered a job.
Saban, who employed both men at LSU, said he has spoken to Muschamp on several occasions.
"Kirby has done nothing but indicate to me that he wants to stay at the University of Alabama and be here," Saban said. "I trust that's what he'll do. He's done a great job for us. He's one of the best assistant coaches in the country. Every year, he's closer and closer to being ready to be a head coach himself."
Smart is believed to be in position to contend for head coaching jobs at Alabama and Georgia, his alma mater, should those jobs open. Last year, Smart turned down an offer to become the defensive coordinator at Georgia.
"Our guys are pretty good and pretty loyal," Saban said. "If anybody talks to them, they immediately let me know."

There was a time when head coaches were excited about assistants getting opportunities.
You know, the kind of opportunities that allowed the head coach to become a head coach.
Miles made some similar comments about his assistants this week.

Sounds rather assholic to me. Better if he said "I'm flattered that other schools are interested in my assistants and it reflects well on the kind of program we've built here and the high caliber assistants we have. We hope they stay with us but I'll definitely understand if they decide to take that next step as I did and move up the career ladder."
Just my 2 cents...

Asked about other programs coming after his coaches, Miles quipped that he has put a sign out warning other teams to stay away and said his policy with coaches and other jobs is to “handle it as the interest comes.”

To Saban's credit, this is why the man has so many former assistants that are now or will soon be head coaches. He encourages them to develop themselves in that direction.

Probably because nobody has been formally offered yet. I'm not saying that UF is getting any of the Bama coaches, in fact, I don't think they will get any of them. However, the smart thing to do would be to let it play out until after the bowl games.

Check this out:
Crowton used to coach La Tech and BYU and now he's mentioned for OooLaLa and Texas State?

He is and I am. You got me there.
I'm really not butthurt, though. I'm thankful for what he did for LSU and I don't blame him for taking the 'bama gig.
But I stand by my post.

Miles has two former assistants coaching in bowl games this season, one a BCS bowl. How many does Saban have again?

Jimbo Fisher, Florida State -- Chick Fil-A-Bowl
Mark Dantonio, Michigan State -- Capital One Bowl
Derek Dooley, Tennessee -- Music City Bowl
Mike Haywood, Miami of Ohio -- soon to be next HC at Pitt
Florida State played in ACC title game and Michigan State finished in 3 way tie for 1st place in Big 10.

Was an assistant under Miles before leaving for FSU.
Mike Gundy was also an assistant under Miles. Okie State is in a bowl game.

That is Coach Saban in a nutshell, if he cannot control it, then he is frustrated by it. I am not saying this is good or bad, but I believe perfectly identifies him.

So the two you mentioned under Miles, who did they also coach under?

For two years. He made his name as Saban's offensive coordinator at LSU, not Miles's.

You're joking, right?
Jimbo Fisher STAYED on with Miles. He was HIRED by Saban in 2000. He was on Saban's LSU staff for 4 seasons and with Miles for only 2 seasons.
