I knew that when I was a student at LSU back in '69 and we played a hell of a game against Auburn, their fans and cheerleaders were screaming Go Plainsmen. Since LSU didn't play Auburn that often, I always thought that their mascot was the Plainsmen. I was really surprised when I heard that they were called the tigers back in the early 80's. Guess what? According to channel 8 here in Montgomery, the first tiger (Aubie) happened to appear back in 1979. This really makes me wonder if Auburn really knows who their mascot is. Why didn't Aubie, the tiger, exist before 1979?

"A popular character among Auburn fans and one of the more animated mascots in the country, Aubie has been on the job since 1979. Aubie’s existence began as a cartoon character that first appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football program cover on October 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger who continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years."

i was at that damn game. i was a sophomore at LSU and went with some friends on a lark. had never been there. it was an awful game but LSU won, somethink like 6-3; very low scoring. anyways, all i remember about auburn was i didn't ever want to go back; it was in the middle of nowhere. you had to drive forever to get there. i've never been back and have no plans to do so.

No, that would be you Mr. Aubbie. You guys have so many mascots you are losing track of what you named them. I think AU is boarder line hoarding.

Granddad, that game was in Tiger Stadium and we won by a point. I think that the final score was 20 to 21. Nice try though. If you really did attend LSU, you probably know what gumbo is.

We were the Plainsman from 1892-1894
According to legend, the first War Eagle flew and died at our first football game, against Georgia in 1892.
John Heisman changed us to the Tigers in 1895.
War Eagle II is officially adopted by the university in 1930
Aubie the Tiger is first drawn by Phil Neel in 1959
Aubie first appeared as a walking mascot in 1979
The eagles start flying around the stadium in 2000
Kinda confusing, I know. And naming War Eagle VI "Tiger" did was make it easier.

To be honest, most of my friends here in Alabama are Auburn fans. The reason why I brought this topic up is because they really had no idea that they were called anything but the tigers. The older ones say their mascot is the Plainsmen and they are really confused why if they are the tigers, why do they scream War Eagle. I really enjoy the friends that I have who are Barners and most of them say that their mascot should be the eagle. What is the connection between a tiger and an eagle?

Nothing at all, actually. Here's the most widely-accepted legend about the War Eagle:
quote:
The most popular story about the battle cry dates back to the first time Auburn met Georgia on the football field in 1892 and centers around a spectator who was a veteran of the Civil War. In the stands with him that day was an eagle the old soldier had found on a battlefield during the war. He had kept it as a pet for almost 30 years. According to witnesses, the eagle suddenly broke free and began majestically circling the playing field. As the eagle soared, Auburn began a steady march toward the Georgia end zone for a thrilling victory. Elated at their team's play and taking the bird's presence as an omen of success, Auburn students and fans began to yell "War Eagle" to spur on their team. At the game's end, the eagle took a sudden dive, crashed into the ground, and died. But the battle cry "War Eagle" lived on to become a symbol of the proud Auburn spirit.
