Has any coach ever had a more meteoric rise than Gus Malzahn?

I'm still amazed at how well Malzahn has done taking the quantum leap from high school head coach to SEC/Division 1-A coordinator. When's the last time a coach took that big of a step and not failed miserably? It's just mind-boggling how someone who was coaching in high school just five years ago will very likely be a HC at a (very good) BCS program next year.

He had the #1 offense in the country at Tulsa. He was also the OC for an Arkansas team that started the season at something like 8-0 and won the SEC West that year. Malzahn is a great coach.

Malzahn is a great coach.

gimmicks
that HS offense will never work once he's a big time HC

No.
Nutt thought you only needed to pass 10-15 times most a game as only 3 things can happen passing and two of them ain't good.
Malzahn adjusts plays and play calling to fit the talent level and skill sets of this players.

No, that was what the nutt camp was spreading around so they could run him off. They complained that you just can't run the spread when you have McFadden and Jones and yet every offense Malzahn has coached at the college level has been one of the top rushing outfits in the country.

I'd argue Gerry Faust has a case. He made a direct leap from a championship level HS coach, to the HC gig at Notre Dame, back when they were still semi-relevant.

They put up pretty good numbers against LSU... only put up 24 points but IIRC, Auburn had pretty bad field position and had to put together long drives

I think he has simplified what he is doing quite a bit with Cam Newton. He does not need to use so much smoke and mirrors with a guy like that. They are doing a lot more power running stuff with him and their backs this year.

No, this was what Nutt spread through the media to justify demoting Gus, who left afterwords and resorting back to his old ways.

Uhh we did a good bit of power running with Ben Tate last year. Last year we were mostly hindered by the fact that Chris Todd sucks balls...

Yeah, he is using an offense similar to one he used at Hughes since that school was smaller and the mental capability isn't comparable to what he had at Springdale (both schools). Basically dumb it down to one read and go.

People said the same thing about McFadden and Jones... remind me what they did in 2005 and 2007 again?

This is true.

This is false.
GM made Chris Todd into a very functional QB last year. When the offense dried up it was primarily due to an offensive line that lost focus....they were the ones who sucked balls. That notwithstanding, Chris Todd set a few records for passing.
