All I know about him is that Bill Belichick said Jones in 1976 was the best QB he's ever seen. Oh and he's almost as revered as Johnny Unitas and still worshiped like a higher power in Baltimore.

I know it was in 1972 and LSU scored 31 (I think) in winning, but damn, cut me some slack- I was 4 years old, man!

My next door neighbor in Nashville was Chester Caddas. He was an assistant coach at Vandy and left to become the head coach at Pacific in '72. He was the coach when they played against Bert...31-13 LSU victory. Caddas coached there for eight years.

I have a picture of my dad jumping to defend a pass against Pacific. That game was in 1970 and Bert was splitting time at QB.

We played the University of Pacific in 70 and 72.

There probably aren't more than a select few on here that know you're referring to Coach Mac's two QB sysytem. #7 Jones and #16 Paul Lyons were the Jurassic Period early 70's equivalent of Jefferson (The runner) and Lee. (The passer) Would take Jones and Lyons in a New York minute though over the two we have now..........

thanks TigerBandAlumnus82, my memory is barely remembering now. so many games i've seen; hard to remember all of them. but, i damn sure remember bert jones. and chollie mac played each qb for a half. wierd; it went back to the year his #1 qb went down with an injury and our season was ruined. his reaction to that was each qb played half a game. chollie mac was a defensive genius. he did more with less on defense than any coach i've seen. he was an offensive doofus. but, a finer man and a man of more integrity and class was not to be found. he was twice as frustrating as les miles as far as the offense went.

Bert Jones was John Elway before John Elway was John Elway. Absolute cannon for an arm. Great athlete. Helluva competitor. I don't think people give him credit for how good he really was. (He had the NFL record for most consecutive completions for a long time.) Too bad the Colts teams he QB'ed were overshadowed by the 70s Steelers & Raiders teams. Plus, I'm sure that sandlot of a field in the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore didn't help Bert's injury condition. He didn't last long in the league once he started getting hurt.
