Why didn't they go to the lowest hanging fruit - the "official state" animals?

I would be ok with all of them except: hotty toddy, cardinal, fanatic, and titan. The Lion would be awesome (but only if there is an actual on-field lion), and the Landshark is already a staple at football games. The Horse could be great (maybe something like Virginia?).

From my understanding at the office....there will be NO live mascot. If a bear, lion, shark, horse etc is picked...it will be just a fluffy costume somebody is wearing.

Nobody's ever called my dog or Tennessee's dog racist that I know of. My dog has been around people from all over the world and never exhibited anything but gratitude to anyone. Raccoons and cats... she doesn't care too much for them. I think Smokey did get in a situation with an Alabama player but it was an encroachment issue, not race. One of 'em did get into it with a Baylor Bear once but that was a non-SEC confrontation. They're pretty easy going. You can interact with them and when they "speak", it can really fire up a crowd. Plus, how many teams have good ol' hound dogs?
Anyone who has a problem with a hound dog being named Ole Missi or Ole Rebel probably deserves to be offended. The problem is THEM, not the dog.
ETA: Hell, name it "Elvis" ...or get two of 'em...name one "Ole Red" and the other "Ole Blue".

It would be great for the school if they did have a live mascot. Can't imagine LSU's campus without Mike the Tiger.

Just don't worry about getting an on-field mascot. You don't need one. Those potential selections are horrible.
