Thanks, Bama. After illegally paying players for years, you opened this Pandora’s Box!

The Big Ten's dominance signals a major shift in the college sports landscape, as the conference has overtaken the SEC as the premier athletic powerhouse. This rise to prominence coincides with the new NIL era, where the Big Ten's deep-pocketed schools and large alumni bases have given them a recruiting advantage in attracting top talent across multiple sports.

The Big Ten Conference has emerged as the dominant force in college sports, sweeping the national championships in men's basketball, women's basketball, and football in 2026. This historic achievement marks the first time a single conference has held all three of these major titles simultaneously. The conference's success extends beyond the 'big three' sports, with additional championships in women's hockey, men's hockey, and potentially baseball.

UCLA far and away the best baseball team in the nation right now. Baseball RPI

Of course this has nothing to do with small shitty conferences consolidating their good teams into two other conferences.

Certainly that's not a factor in any of this.

It is all Nick Saban's fault.

Right?

The Pac-12 was not a “small shitty conference.” It was a dominant force for decades in multiple sports that the B1G effectively raided and has paid off, unlike the SEC’s moves with the Big-12 and ACC. And Saban went to Bama because the REC built a moat around the talent, the way Warren Buffet invests in companies that already have a monopoly. He didn’t create the problem, but he took advantage of it to the point that everyone else finally did something about it!

An LSU football/KU bball fan throwing shade about paying players is rich.

What ACC teams did the SEC take, since South Carolina?

South Carolina joined as an independent for 20 years (Metro for non-football sports)

I guess I'll agree and pretend like the last 40 years never happened. The Big 18 has found success with unlimited transfers and NIL, without the huge bag, the players are staying in the south where they are from.

None, and that’s part of the problem. B1G has added value and expanded footprint, SEC has not.

Yeah, we should really consider adding some powerhouse schools like Texas and Oklahoma.

Your basketball team recently vacated a Final Four for paying players and your football team recently vacated 37 wins for paying a player with money stolen from a children's hospital.

Teams that have won a football national championship since Florida, Georgia, Alabama, or LSU last won one:
Ohio State
Michigan
Indiana
I’d say it’s a pretty done deal—Midwest hasn’t rolled through the South like this since Sherman!

So, it is your argument that Alabama was the only team in the nation to pay players?

Alleged payments from an LSU booster to family members of Tigers football players have come to light as part of the proceedings for that booster's wire fraud case in Louisiana.
CBS Sports

Make no mistake about it, all of the major teams paid players one way or other. Some just did it better than others.
