ESPN plans to replace a 35-year-old Sunday-programming mainstay with what executives believe could become a new franchise — devoted to sports that haven’t always gotten their due.

The Disney sports-media giant will use Sunday primetime in the summer to launch “Women’s Sports Sundays,” a hub for top match-ups from the WNBA and NWSL

In 2023, ESPN tested an 11 p.m. version of “SportsCenter” that was anchored and produced by women, and focused heavily on women’s sports. Financial-services firm Ally, which had struck a deal with Disney to have 90% of its ad dollars allocated to women’s sports programming, supported the show. Ally is likely to support the new Sunday program.

“Women’s Sports Sundays” isn’t an experiment, says Rosalyn Durant, ESPN’s executive vice president, programming & acquisitions, during an interview: “It is a flag in the ground, and a continuing commitment.”

Don't they have a duty to increase revenue for their shareholders?

Makes sense. A lot of women viewers out there. Most don’t know anything about ESPN though

So baseball has fallen behind women’s sports?

It is really impressive to see these people continue to spit into the wind with this stuff. They refuse to realize two very obvious facts:

1. The vast majority of men do not have any interest in watching women play sports.

2. The vast majority of women do not have any interest in watching women play sports.

Despite these two things that literally everyone else knows they continue to be convinced that with enough exposure women's sports will be just as big as men's, and that they are bravely correcting a wrong rather than peddling a white elephant.

Imagine how terrible their TV ratings would actually be if they didn’t promote it at every opportunity and give it equal billing.

The message. DIS stock down 42.28% the last five years. Meanwhile, S&P 500 up 75.% the same period.

Oh, Lawd. Don't post that on the M/TV Board. The entertainment centrists will twist themselves into pretzels arguing that's a good thing.

In today’s DEI world. ESPN has to respond to its stake holders. They are trying. Failing but at least trying
