Was he equal to Coach Bear Bryant in his time?
His PreWooden dynasty was amazing and would have been even more so if not for outside issues at the time.

They coached together 7 years. He was the Baron of college basketball.

Yep, and Bryant said one of the reasons he left Kentucky was the year Rupp won the SEC BB trophy and Bryant won the SEC FB trophy - at the annual awards dinner, Rupp got a new Cadillac and Bryant got a new watch.

Didn't read anything but the title but I'm assuming this thread is about his racism.

No, please lets keep this about his career and how he compared to legends like Bryant and other big names.

Because you're somehow dumber than me? Wild guess.

You should go research who the coach was who integrated the SEC before you post. Idiot.
Go see how your stupid OT thread is going.

LSU fan here, but I was so disappointed when Rupp's Runts lost the 1966 NCAA championship game. I wish they would have had a couple of days rest after beating Duke in the semi-final, but back then they played the semi-finals and finals on consecutive nights. (I think)
I was a small kid, but well remember Louie Dampier and Pat Riley when UK came to BR in '67. Dampier was deadly from the corner.
Got Coach Rupp's autograph after the game. Hope I still have it somewhere.
He was a legend. The Baron of the Bluegrass.

Rupp was from Kansas. Got his Masters in mathematics at Columbia University. Coached black players as a high school coach in Illinois. Tried to recruit Butch Beard in 1963 but he got death threats from all over the SEC footprint.
In the 1948 Olympics he roomed with a black player. His top 10 opponents list included 5 black players.
Kentucky unlike some SEC schools played teams with black players. Even brought those teams into Memorial Coliseum.
A lot of morons like to call him a racist. The whole damn SEC was racist back then and black players were scared to come to UK and play.
He wasn’t a civil rights icon but he was a damn sight better man than most at that time. He gave a fortune to the Shriners Hospital in Lexington that cared for children of every race
But yeah call him a racist so you can feel better about the bigotry at other SEC schools that gets ignored.

As one guy said Ky basketball “it was like starting a hockey league in Texas” during Rupp’s years. He was on his way out before schools got serious about BB.
