Herbstreit's comments were spot on about winning national championships

If you didn't catch his comments last week, Herbstreit stated that teams win NCs, not chasing 4 and 5 stars and that was clearly the case last night. While Miami went out and paid big for Beck and others, Indiana, which clearly had a much inferior team talent-wise, played as a team and that's what won them the NC.
Indiana's victory also showed the importance of being well coached and showed how a team that plays together week in and week out can accomplish big things. If you look at Indiana's talent and the programs they beat throughout the season - Miami, Alabama by 35, Ohio State, Oregon twice and one victory by 34 - and we may never see that again.
It's nice to see that playing as a team and with heart still matters!

He’s correct but let’s not act like Indiana didn’t buy a lot of talent. They just spent their money on guys who wanted to win.

If Beck leads his receiver to the end zone, Miami wins.
Overall, I agree with Herbie, but one bad play doesn’t vindicate him.

The thing is if you got the right 4 and 5 star players and good leaders and coaching staff that got them playing together you can be even better. So no, just going for the 3 stars thinking they will all work hard is idiotic. Find the players that have the mentality you need for your team and system and try to get the most talented of that subset if you can.

Doesn’t work in reality.
Lot of those guys were transfers that Cignetti maybe spent 1 day with on a campus visit and offered. You can’t tell if a player is a team player from a 1 day visit. His coaching was good, but I don’t think you can specifically craft a roster that you think are all team players when you see them for maybe 6-8 hours then have to decide in the portal to offer or not.
It’s the same way in real business. You Can have 35 open roles to fill thinking you’re getting good employees as they put on a show inn the interview, but you never really know until weeks in how they really are.

This plus you had all the JMU guys that had played together and knew his system well. They were a VERY old CFB team. Doubt what happened for Indiana can be duplicated on such a large scale again--Coach, players from a very good team go to another school, pick up key NIL position players.
For Indiana to do what they did they had.
1. Most important the right coach.
2. Much older players.
3. Players that had been together for a long time.
4. Money to get key position players.
5. Started the season not on the radar.
Great team work with a coach that kept them focused. He got 13 players to go with him and many had just won a championship.

Let’s look at the last 10 NC’s and the player star ratings. Let’s not get carried away with the IU hype.

Imagine if Malachi Toney was 23 and still playing college football, fully developed.

Um...most teams that win titles are full of four and five stars. But you still need great coaching. Saban, Meyer, Smart, Miles, Harbough etc can attest to that.
Indiana is not the norm, at all. Not even close.

The Covid years, we had Michael Clemons drafted. He was 23. The NFL guys said there is a huge difference between a 20 year old and a 23 year old body in the weight room. Now, there are teams that have rosters full of 21-23 year olds winning games, and gaslight everyone into thinking they discovered something new, and the age of developing blue chippers out of HS is over.

The star ranking system is for ranking kids in High School, all that matters is how kids play in college......

Both have worked. Last night was just the least practiced example

They sure put a BEAT down on Bama. As I stated in my post doubtful everything can come together for a team like Indiana to win a Championship without more star power but it did this time.

Q
Nah. Safety had rotated over. Would have taken a perfect pass and catch. This was not a 2nd and 26 situation.
