I guess the idea that it’s better to have a roster mostly of HS recruits than transfers….

isn’t necessarily true; at least in the short term for the current playoffs.

If I recall correctly, and y’all are free to correct me if I’m wrong, the teams remaining in the playoffs are more transfer oriented than the teams that are out.

I don’t know what other coaches think, but I remember Kirby saying that he believes relying on the transfer portal isn’t sustainable for long-term success. I guess that remains to be seen.

I also think one needs to take into consideration the age / experience of the rosters. Indiana does have a lot of transfers. But they also have an older and I’m guessing more experienced roster. I’m not yet convinced they can be a long-term success.

As always, I reserve the right to be wrong.

I think moving forward you need to recruit as well as you can but leave room to fill the holes on your roster where you don't have proven/experienced players.

Having 100 plus guys on a roster is insane. Keep/pay 50/55 that dress, then assemble a practice squad.

If they want to get paid they need contracts and will need to honor them. NFL players don’t just up and leave every year without consequences

I think the remaining 4 teams have a healthy mix of both. It depends on where your previous weaknesses were then bringing in experienced guys to play there.

Oregon has done both at a high level, so has Miami

I think you can do more portals to win short term. But not sure its sustainable. You would need to do so every year and its hard to always get all newcomers on same page.

Here’s the playoff team’s rates. Still think recruiting has value. Less than pre-portal but still has value.

Miami has added key experienced portal players. Beck is as night and day as you will see. I’m a bit surprised by tOSU’s game plan vs UM. Patricia had a loaded defensive line this year but they couldn’t get home with just four because the OL for Miami is very stout, especially after the SMU game. Seems like they had a come to Jesus moment with Cristobal after that loss. OSU fans were claiming that it was like them last year when they lost to Michigan. The results seem to bare that out.

Texas spent a ton of money on retention last year and on their #1 recruiting class. They went light on the portal and we had a much less competitive roster this year than the previous two. Sark seems to have done a complete 180 heading into 2026. We’ll see how it turns out.
