What was the best method for the college football postseason?

Historically, we've had:
Pre-AP (very few bowl games, national champs either just declared by newspapers or through retro polls)
AP/UPI, before bowl games (bowl games were seen as rewards and exhibition games more than part of the season)
AP/UPI, after bowl games (bowl games mattered, chaos could ensue thanks to bowl tie-ins, where the #5 team could jump all the way to #1)
BCS precursors (bowl games worked together to schedule #1 vs #2, but bowl tie-ins could still cause issues)
BCS (multiple iterations on how the rankings were reached, but ultimately #1 vs #2 at the end of the season)
4-team playoff (top 4 teams determined by committee)
12-team playoff (top 12 teams determined by committee with exceptions in place for G5 programs, and starting next year, Notre Dame)
There is a small, nostalgic part of me that misses the old bowl system of the 80s. It felt like getting to a bowl game could still be a reward, they were relevant to the title, but there wasn't QUITE YET the insane number of bowl games that seemed to cheapen the point of going.
For example, there were 18 bowl games in 1985; by 2002 there were 28 and by 2012 there were 35 and by 2015 there were 42 (though playoff games are counted in this number, that only nets a +1 in total games in the 4-team playoff era).
Yeah, it had the potential for chaos personified based on bowl matchups, but I can remember getting invited to a bowl meaning something - a real reward in a real place the players would actually enjoy visiting.
I mean, no one wants to go to Birmingham or Shreveport.

For starters, an SEC team to not get dismantled by 38-3.

12 team playoff by far is better....play it out on the field like every other sport
If we had had a 12 team playoff the whole time, college football history would be vastly different
Do you really think Georgia Tech/Colorado were the best teams in 1990? 1984 BYU?
One of Spurrier's best teams was 2001 IMO. 2001 Florida vs. 2001 Miami would have been a game instead of the Nebraska beatdown we had to swallow
So many years would have looked alot different actually playing it out on the field

It's all about the $$$. While not many people care to go or watch these bowl, they still make money.
Google for economic benefit for Birmingham Bowl:
quote:
The game brings in substantial visitor spending, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses, with recent estimates projecting over $9 million in impact for the 2025 event alone.
The 2024 season Birmingham Bowl (Georgia Tech vs Vanderbilt) had 4.05M Viewers.
While fans may want more meaningful bowl games, the money speaks more than what fans want.

The poll-bowl setup was an absolute nightmare. After ‘71 when both the AP and UPI agreed to select their champions after all bowls you could be sitting there at number 4 or whatever and be thinking…
If Ohio loses, and Nebraska wins but by less than 3, and if PSU wins, but USCw Ties…
We are the champs! Maybe… If the UPI goes another direction, then we are co-champions!
Nothing will ever be perfect, but I’ll take this current shite over the above all day.

Combining BCS style rankings with a playoff would be the best system imo. I think 8 teams is plenty. No byes.

I sometimes wonder if some of college football's purity disappeared with the creation of the AP poll. I know that's going back a LONG way, but still... national prestige wasn't limited entirely to winning the national championship.

That and not to lose to Houston.

So true and I'm still not sure the fan even knows what they want. They rarely though.

The current system is the best.
