I remember thinking that win was going to launch LSU into a great season and a playoff run. Turns out it was fool’s gold. Who would’ve thought that after that victory, Kelly would be fired before the season even ended? Just goes to show how quickly things can change.

This is certainly true for LSU. Here is their preseason rank and final rank since Joe Burrow and Joe Brady.
2020: preseason #6, final unranked
2021: preseason #16, final unranked
2022: preseason unranked, final #16
2023: preseason #5, final #12
2024: preseason #13, final unranked
2025: preseason #9, final unranked

It doesn't matter when you start ranking teams. They change every week as more information got better.
Neither LSU nor Clemson finished the season ranked, thus the system is working fine.
It does make a great case why game time rankings don't mean anything after the fact. AKA if LSU starts trying to claim they beat a top10 team this year that's kind of bunk. But I haven't seen anyone doing that.

If you refer back to my earlier post, FSU is who knocked the wheels off the LSU soapbox derby car in the first game two years in a row.
