They played an extra, “unnecessary” conference championship game and got beat 34-7.

They were 11 in the final regular season poll.

They’re a two loss team.

Why should they be punished for playing a game that ND or Miami didn’t have to play?

Because they were not in before the loss. They won't move up.

You have to be #10

Because they weren't in before the game. They needed the CC to be one of the 5 highest ranked conference champions and secure an autobid. They didn't get it.

Not saying they wouldn't but which teams in the rest of the top 12 would they be favored to beat?

Exactly this.

A lot of people on this board know how to troll really well but almost none of them know football or even follow it as closely as they think they do.

They were #11? Why wouldn’t they be a top 12 team if they didn’t lose a game?

Five auto bids leaves 7 teams. A one loss BYU at #11 would be in.

Bama and ND are ranked above them

It's not the Top 12 teams with AQs and never will be.

Committee basically said last weeks rankings don’t mean shite. Another reason why this argument from op is trash.

Because 11 and 12 aren't currently in the bracket. When you account for the 5 highest ranked conference champions, which we had no way of knowing until yesterday, they drop. Fair or not James Madison, Tulane or Duke are the teams in the mix for 11 and 12.

But that’s the rub, isn’t it?

We can poke holes in this system all day long. None of it makes sense.

BYU isn’t in because their strength of schedule is shite and they haven’t done anything to really convince the committee they can compete for an NC. But they had enough of a resume to be ranked #11 before their conference championship game, which could only hurt them.

James Madison’s SOS is shite, and they would NEVER be considered a top 12 team. But they won their games, so they get an AQ. Therefore, their SOS doesn’t matter.

Alabama’s SOS is challenging, but they look like shite in the last quarter of the season, finishing with a blowout loss to a team that actually is competitive for the NC. But the eye test doesn’t matter because of their #9 ranking, which is much better than a #11 ranking. Losses don’t matter either as they have 3.

ND’s SOS is mediocre, and they won nothing of note, but they’re potentially jumping Alabama, who lost their conference championship game, which is the only thing that could keep them (Alabama) out. Wins don’t matter.

Duke won their conference, but as a five loss team, isn’t eligible for the AQ because the AQ isn’t actually an AQ at all—it’s just a place marker for higher ranked teams to get in. Conference championships don’t matter. So playing the easiest schedule imaginable in an AQ conference is preferable, meaning SOS doesn’t matter.

We’re hitting a wall here. AQ matters and doesn’t matter. SOS matters and doesn’t matter. Conference championship matters and doesn’t matter. Losses matter and don’t matter. Wins matter and don’t matter. Eye test matters and doesn’t matter.

Matter is a really fricking weird word when you use it over and over.

Point is - and the problem always plaguing CFB - is that these arbitrary measurements for “finding” a champion always fall short and never make sense.

Why shouldn’t BYU be in? Which of the above criteria matters this time? Because it seems to change.

You just presented the reason. They weren’t in with the regular season poll. 2 auto qualifiers with the G5 teams. Only 10 spots left. You think they should move up after:

They played an extra, “unnecessary” conference championship game and got beat 34-7.
