Not enough meat on the bone for 12 team playoff out of 130 plus teams

Or just put the best 12 in using a brain and nothing else
Osu
IU
uGA
Tech
Ole miss
Aggie
Ou
Bama
Oregon
Vandy
Miami
ND
Not really that hard. Maybe mix up the seeding

I used to think this, but changed my mind. 12 gives some juice to conference championship (a bye definitely means something) that is completely gone if every team has a first round game.
12 is also good for engagement because there are legit arguments about the last team in. It sucks for Vandy to get left out, but no one wants USC to get a shot at OSU which is where we would be with 16 teams.
If we do go to 16, at least 2 of the extra spots need to go to conference champions (7+11)

Why stop there? Why not 64? Start mid season?

Let's just make it a 136 team playoff and start the first round of the playoffs on the first weekend of September.

I would be good with 16 and get rid of conference championship games.

There is no legitimate reason to go beyond 4. Even 4 is iffy most years.

No matter what number you make it, people will scream for more teams.
Make it 16, then it will be “we need 24” or “it has to be 32”
This is the first year of this format, we haven’t even gotten to the selected teams that make it.
Someone will always be unhappy no matter what you do.

Use similar to BCS system (AP poll, coaches poll, 20 computer polls - getting rid of 3 highest and 3 lowest rankings) then take the top 8. No BS byes, no Conf Champs, and don’t punish losers of CCG. Play RD 1 weekend before Christmas. Semis on New years and championship 9 days later on that Monday

They need the BCS formula without the AP component removed and the Vegas spread incorporated.
That will never happen though because that’s like taking stock trades away from congress.

This is correct. 2 was fine most years, but there was occasionally a third team that deserved a shot. 4 was as close to ideal as it was gonna get.
The only thing that's changed that makes me okay with 8 or 12 teams is the way the non-playoff bowls have become meaningless with opt-outs the last few years.
If we could find a way to make the other bowls matter again, I'd go right back to wanting a 4-team playoff. I don't see it happening though.

How would you do this without releasing playoff seedings prior to Championship weekend? That would mean you can't play yourself out but can't play yourself in either. Occasionally giving the third place team a slight unearned advantage is worth it to occasionally get a CCG with a playoff spot on the line.

Playoffs by their nature just be exclusionary not inclusive. 6 is all that’s needed. 4 power 4 conference game winners and 2 wildcards. 2 pods of round robin to set a real title game.
