I used 247 for this list, not sure if they're the best source.

Only 2 programs have won titles with composite talent outside of the Top 5 (Clemson x2, Michigan)

Michigan is the only statistical outlier at #14.

2024 - Ohio State - #3
2023 - Michigan - #14
2022 - Georgia - #2
2021 - Georgia - #2
2020 - Alabama - #2
2019 - LSU - #5
2018 - Clemson - #6
2017 - Alabama - #1
2016 - Clemson - #9
2015 - Alabama - #1

Obviously not shocked by the data. I do want to know how the hell Michigan pulled that off because they're the unicorn on the list.

I don't believe the "cheating" was any really weird anomaly that provided a marked advantage.

They were a senior led team with a lot of snaps together. They were well coached and disciplined. Very dedicated to a power team that was almost a throwback at the time.

It was a sound football team that played well as a team. I think that is very underrated in the current NIL/portal era.

Bama blew that game and it is frustrating, but they were a solid ball team.

The historical trends lend oneself to believe that Ole Miss and TTU won't have the horses for a deep playoff run.

But, that's why we play the games.

You didn’t even mention the current #2 team in Indiana being dead last at #72. 72!!!

Edit: Teams ahead of Indiana:
The entirety of the SEC and B1G, UTSA, Boston College, Oregon St, and UNLV just to name a few.

What’s this about jimmy’s and Joe’s?

Michigan beat Alabama in a playoff game the year they won a natty due to a center that made bad snaps at critical times. The Alabama fans said he had done it all year but was still on the field for some reason.

I read somewhere Michigan used the 125 man roster in a new NIL influenced way. They put good players on walk on status but paid them with NIL instead of a scholarship. It gave them depth other teams did not have. I don't know if that is true or not.

The talent composite isn’t as important as it used to be with the ability to replace high school recruiting misses with proven college players via the transfer portal

I’m surprised about Clemson. The years they won, they were absolutely loaded. Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Higgins… they were very good football teams

The crazy thing is how 4, 6, 7, and 10 are doing. This thread proves you have to have top 10 talent to consistently compete for a national title. But you also need some coaching, chemistry and a quarterback and O-line that doesn’t lose games.

#4: Texas 7-3, hampered by QB issues in the first half of the season
#6: LSU 6-4, hampered by QB issues and a non existent offensive line, coach fired
#7: Clemson 5-5, hampered by an offense that ranks 10th in the ACC in points and yards.
#10: Penn State 4-6, hampered by a passing attack that ranks 15th in the Big 10, coach fired

That 2023 Michigan team doesn’t make it to 2023 in the form it took if it hadn’t been for the cheating the previous 2.5 seasons. The success they had created the momentum for players staying and boosters funding their NIL program.

The championship was fruit of the poisoned tree regardless of whether or not they cheated in the Alabama game.

Probably would be even better if you combined draft totals from the NFL.

Michigan had a load get drafted following that title.

I wonder how many covid seniors they had. It was 2023, so that's about the prime peak isn't it?

I looked and they had 44 seniors in 2023. That's half a roster. Of the 44, 12 of them went to the NFL.

I can buy that Ole Miss could get hot and make a run. They have a very good running back and the QB is mobile plus can get hot passing the ball at times. The biggest issue with Ole Miss is can the defense hold up against the more elite offenses. Kiffin can make some boneheaded coaching decisions at times in big games also.
