re: Smart Thermostat for Home

Posted by TAMU-93 on 5/21/26 at 8:06 am to
I have a Amazon Smart Thermostat.

In the Amazon Alexa app you can create routines, like if the temperature is above 80 send a notification. But those won't work if the device is offline. The device will show offline in the app, but it doesn't push a notification.

The c wire provides power for the thermostat. There are some smart thermostats that work off batteries. To know if you have it, you'd have to look for it on your air handler's control board.
I rewatched Halloween today because of this thread and lost it when Michael carjacks the nurse. I was thinking, "This kid has been locked up since he was six, how does he know how to drive?" And then the very next scene, a character yells, "How the hell did he learn to drive?!" Perfect timing.

Not a great movie. It's coasting on name recognition.

East of Eden, a modern interpretation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames (Pugh).

Cathy is in no way a hero, anti or otherwise. This "modern interpretation" is going to blow.

I'm not that familiar with New Orleans and I still found it hillarious.
I'd rank them:
1. Count of Monte Cristo
2. Brothers Karamazov
3. Don Quixote

Possibly, Windows 11 requires a GUID Partition Table (GPT) on the boot drive. Check in disk manager -> right click the boot disk -> properties -> volumes -> partition syle.

ChromeOS Flex is basically a cloud console. If you do everything in the browser, it's fine. I'm assuming you were running Windows on purpose. ChromeOS Flex doesn't run Windows programs.

If you're willing to wipe your disk, try doing a fresh install of Windows 11. If it still says your hardware is incompatible, I'd install some flavor of Linux, like Mint, over ChromeOS Flex.

My friend talked me into trying a case with a kickstand. I didn't think it would be that useful, but I was wrong. I absolutely love it. Because, of course, I'd rather have the screen pointed at me than the ceiling.

Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It by Cory Doctorow
We might not even use apps in the future. Imagine an Agentic OS on your phone where you simply ask for help with your sobriety. It could find and sign you up for meetings, manage your schedule, and use GPS to keep you away from old triggers. It could proactively freeze your credit card at liquor stores, block enabling contacts, and even alert your support system if you’re heading toward a relapse. At that point, the phone itself becomes the intervention.
The animation is gorgeous. I don't remember the previous animated series looking this good. They nailed that "lived in" universe look.

In that case, you definitely want to stay with Windows.

The Snapdragon is an ARM chip, which can cause compatibility issues with the specialized x86-based software and VBA macros required for actuarial science.

It's a little out of your price range, but I recommend the HP Omnibook instead. It uses an Intel Core Ultra 5 (x86), so it's natively compatible with all her tools while still offering the same high efficiency and battery life.

The 16GB of RAM is better for her data analysis, while the 2-in-1 design and included stylus are perfect for marking up class notes.

You should check if her department has required software and recommended specs. An engineering student might need a laptop that runs CAD while a business major might only need a browser and Microsoft Office. Those two students are going to have different hardware requirements.

ETA: If there's no specific requirement, I'd consider the Macbook Neo which is $499 with the educational discount.
