Who was the last national championship coach who was a play caller?

Drawing a blank. Definiitely not Saban or Dabo or Kirby. Not Harbaugh or Oregon. Ohio State had Chip Kelly last season.
Heupel needs to take note. If Saban and Kirby didn't think that it was the thing to do, that's probably a sign.

Could have been Saban in his early years at Bama. He called defensive plays until handing the reins to Smart

Doesn’t Sark call the plays at Texas? He almost did it a couple of years ago if he was calling plays then.

If you don’t think those two dudes have their hands all over the defensive side of the ball, not sure what to say here.
ETA: Saban and Kirby, to be clear. Saban had to run the defense in 2023 due to Kevin Steele’s poor health.
