The NCAA did not make facemasks on helmets mandatory until 1993.

Football Archaeology

We joke about the "Leather Helmet Days," but can you imagine someone walking onto the field in 1992 without a facemask?

They should make them huge and guarantee a penalty on every tackle

Quentin Coryatt would be so much fun to watch if the WR had no facemask

Getting rid of facemasks would probably cut down on concussions.

I don't know who it was but a pro player said that when they introduced face masks it took the fear out of football.

Tommy McDonald: A receiver, he was the last position player to play an entire season without a face mask, retiring after the 1968 season.

Toni Fritsch: A kicker, he was the last player at that position to play without a face mask, in 1971.

Scott Player: Though he was the last to wear a single-bar face mask, this style had been largely phased out by the 1980s and was officially banned for all new players in 2004.
