Offense/Defense Regression/Progression

Notable trend these two years with DeBoers offense and Wommack Defense. The offense gets worse as the season goes while the defense improves.
Typically it’s the opposite as you are what you are on defense while offense takes more time to gel and improve. What gives here?

Offense doesn't have enough standard offense counters to quality DC's adjustments, so they're reduced to fiddly-frick gadget plays to make splashes.

Inadequate coaching and program management.

We are a one dimensional offense who can't run the football. This is the first time since 2004 where there have been three straight games that the offense has failed to rush for 100+. You can't progress as an offense if you can't run the football.

We just put up 400 yards, 5/9 drives >60 yards, and 21 points + a missed field goal against a top 10 defense

Agreed but the offense had twice as many yards as OU yesterday. Turnovers and special teams mistakes were as much to blame as the lack of a running game. Hidden yardage. The mis tackle by Brooks on the opening punt return was a huge mistake. It’s the ordinary plays like that which lose close games.

Oklahoma couldn't run the football on us.. Basically struggled to move the ball all day and won.
Tell me why?

As far as offense, I think we’re way, way too predictable and because we really can’t run the ball, we get and are going to continue to get blitz, blitz, blitz because the offensive line is simply terrible and we have no hot routes.
I have to admit the defense, while not dominant, has been solid, sometimes even really good.

Same thing happened last year offense was awful by end of season and defense was better

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at least two of those turnovers occurred on pass plays. I'm not saying history would be different if we could consistently run the football, but it is a question that should be asked. When the defense knows that there is a 90% chance that the next play is going to be the QB dropping back to pass, they tend to be able to make plays more consistently.
Either way, to quote Bear Bryant: the same things win that always won. You can't win a championship if you can't run the football.

Actually I think it’s the opposite. The defense reacts to the offense.
You see this in the NFL too. Offenses come exploding out of the gate while defenses take time to adjust to that. That’s why every year at both the NFL and CFB, there’ll be tons of guys on pace for huge statistical seasons but most of them falter as the year goes along and defenses adjusts

Jesus. How about you get some football IQ?
We have the #119 ranked running game in the country, no doubt the worst in the history of the program.
Even 2006 and 2007, with an offensive line anchored by the legendary Chris Capps...and one of those years coached by Mike Shula...finished #77 and #61.
Every player and every coach that touches the running game is responsible. It screams incompetence and ineptitude.
People focus on turnovers, and rightly so. But why did we go 3 and out on two out of the three drives after we took the lead?
Because we have no fricking running game.

We’ve had a limited run game all year, but it didn’t “regress” this game. Nor did we need a run game to score on Oklahoma and we even utilized it just fine on those poor drives with some of our best runs of the day.
Ole Miss: 116 yards, 2.8 YPC
Tennessee: 63, 1.7 YPC
Alabama: 80, 2.4
The way to beat Oklahoma isn’t running into their front. It’s throwing on them and not having 13 points flip off special teams.

3 turnovers, a missed FG and letting a punt return nearly go to the house. Offense and special teams got beat yesterday. Only the defense won. If you get beat in 2 facets of the game, 99% of the time, you are going to lose. That’s especially true when the turnover differential is lopsided.

How did the offense get beat when we put up almost 500 yards on what is supposed to be one of the best defenses in the nation?

Points is literally all that matters and this offense is mid-level in the SEC. No better than maybe 7th best in SEC games. No ability to counter a pass rush. No ability to hit explosive plays.

Without one of the two turnovers, the offense is fine
Without one of the punt return missed tackle, punt fumble, and missed field goal; special teams gets away
So if you’re trying to scapegoated this solely on the offense, just stop. It was a multitude of errors but it wasn’t some massive collapse by the offense like last year.

Because they couldn’t handle pressure and that ended up in them giving the ball to the opponent on short fields or outright handing them points.
Not saying Grubb threw the ball. But the musical chairs on the OL all season, and usually not because of injury, means that unit is well behind in terms of continuity and experience.
Hell we didn’t even play Carroll but maybe a series against LSU and then we start him yesterday and run him the whole game. Same for Formby bouncing to guard. Has limited reps there all year. Why didn’t we do that six weeks ago? Maybe they’d have been better prepared for what they faced yesterday.
This offensive staff, from the OL coach all the way up to DeBoer, has failed to maximize this roster. Hopefully they don’t just think it’s personnel issues.

Why do you keep saying almost 500 yards? We had 406. And only had 132 in the second half.

The patent pending 2nd half strip sack fumble special and our inability to run the ball are why so many of our games have been closer than they ought to be and finally broke the wrong way yesterday.
People are right that there is no change coming to the run game but it doesn't change that the lack of it is precisely why the margins are so thin for our team. And nobody wants to hear this but I don't think there is any real fix for what ills this offense because there is not going to be a complimentary run game that forces man coverage and run focused fronts instead of pass focused alignments that exploit our weaknesses in pass protection.
